I have done this. But I wouldn't burn the bridge with them. I wanted to do a free shoot for a coffee company. They have a great brand and we came up with a pretty good concept. However I don't see them needing more content from me after that based on our meeting...

I did a free one for a book store once. And that one has actually landed me a few contracts with larger companies. To that one has made me a lot of money.

Yeah, chasing work from the same company would be terrible advice. They’ll always try to get the same level of work while also wanting it free or what would be essentially free.
Who on earth gave you advice that bad?
What you described that you do instead is exactly what I do, and it has been very prolific. A lot of well paying jobs have come from people who saw a piece that I did for free.

In general IDK what your paid work looks like because that look and feel was dictated by the client or agency. I care what YOUR work looks like, the images that originated from YOU. That can only come from work that you didn’t get paid for, when YOU have full creative control.
