Analysis: 'Why in the World are the Olympics Being Held in China?'

Some human rights groups are calling this week's Olympics scheduled to start on Friday in Beijing the “Genocide Games.”

China is accused of holding more than 1 million ethnic Muslims in concentration camps while continuing to severely restrict religious freedom and trample on human rights.

An organization that serves persecuted Christians across the globe is implementing a “prayer boycott” as the 2022 Winter Olympics kick off Friday in Beijing.

With diplomatic embargoes and angst surrounding China’s human rights abuses, The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) calls Christians to pray for Chinese citizens suffering persecution at the hands of a brutal communist regime.

Someone who is associated with the Olympics, or with a country who is in conflict with China, any country, may think that letting China have a special reward like the Olympics might appease them. Something that I expect will backfire and encourage other countries to expect concessions as well. Pray 🙏.

I was heavily involed in the Sydney 2000 games. I became totally turned off the Olympic games. The Olympics are only about Profit and Business. The sport and athletes are just a comodity to make lots and lots of money.

Most people that I know stopped watching the Olympics when cable television was invented.

The logic of human rights abuse and the boycott of the Olympics is explained from a historical perspective.

1980: US boycotted Olympics in response to USSR's invasion of Afghanistan. Athletes who had trained their whole lives for said Olympics were sacrificed for the sake of politics, but it was for a good cause.

2001-2021: the USA invaded Afghanistan under the banner of fighting global terrorism. Over hundreds of thousands of Afghanis were killed during the war, while turning 5.7 million people into refugees, and the country into shambles. Despite Osama bin Laden being captured in 2011, US Army continued to occupy the country. They left in 2021 in a disorderly withdrawal, only to return control of the country back to the Taliban. The USA has frozen the foreign reserves of Afghanistan and sanctioned the Taliban government, inflicting a humanitarian crisis on the Afghan people who are in need of basic things like food, medical supplies, clean water, vaccines, fuels, etc.

2022: In a similar fashion, the USA boycotts the 2022 Winter Olympics in response to their own invasion of Afghanistan.

But wait a minute, this does not sound right. Using the same western standard, the USA should boycott their own game, and not the one hosted by Beijing. If anything, is this double standard, hypocrisy, and politicizing the Olympics? The Olympic Game is meant for athletes, not politicians. Stop your theatrical show of diplomatic boycott and vile propaganda.
