What Are Relative Major/Minor Chords and Scales? Music Theory Guitar Lesson

Hello friends,
and welcome to another weekend music theory guitar lesson! In this tutorial, I'll discuss the concept of relative major/minor chords and scales. This principle of music theory describes the relationship between the major scale and the natural minor scale. The outcome of this study proves that for every major scale, there is a minor scale with the exact same notes; likewise, for every major chord, there is a min7 chord that has the same notes as well. We will be working in the key of C, but this knowledge will apply to all keys. Let's get started!

Thanks a lot Rob. It's as easy as that, the sixth note in the scale is the relative, anybody with that knowledge could have told me years ago. Cheers, Dave O Sth Australia..

Got it! When on the low E string major tonic notes, I can always find the relative minor now.

So how do you make C major to C minor if you flatten the 3rd 6th and 7th of C major you end up with A minor? Great video by the way! Thanks!

on the fret board you start the relative min. note on an "a" note but call it an "a min". Why?

Confused as to why you went to the strings you did. They have a relationship I know but for us beginners it doesn't make much sense. I gather a whole is two frets and a half is 1?? But how did you know which strings to jump to or which to skip? Is there a beginners version of this? lol. I feel like being given a drink from a fire hose as they say.
