I HIGHLY recommend you use headphones or good speakers for this video. You NEED to hear the bass, and if you're listening on a mobile device this probably won't "work"

I've been a self taught musician for 20 years. I knew how to write and play music, but after recently finding your channel, I am now beginning to UNDERSTAND music. I've never understood many concepts until I've heard you explain them. I've always written in scales, but never really knew or cared which one. I didn't think this stuff was important for what I was doing. Now I realize how much better it will make me and how much easier it will be to write and learn music. You've opened up a whole new world to me in just the couple weeks I've been watching your videos. This is perfect because I've been fascinated with Cmajor and Aminor and their relativity and have been playing around with it on the piano a lot (white keys haha). So this video reinforces what I've recently discovered. You've earned my money. I'm heading to Patreon right now. And everyone else who eats these videos up should as well!

I learned more music theory in 2 days with this guy's vids than I did my entire childhood music lessons.

Great practical demonstration of a concept that is usually taught in a very abstract manner! Thanks!

@Signals Music Studio
I’ve commented on a couple of your videos lately but I really hope you see this one. I just want to say thank you. I have been playing guitar for well over 20 years but have never taken it seriously, just dabbling with the odd tune. I have always wanted to learn music theory after reading some guitar mags and being left to feel like a confused idiot because I just could not understand what they were talking about. At the beginning of this year, I had a massive mental breakdown as a result of the anxiety and mental health issues I suffer from. I locked myself away in my room for days and in that time, music was my go to for remaining stable and keeping calm. I started to use YouTube to ‘study’ music theory and found I started to take it in reasonably easy. I’ve watched hundreds of videos explaining modes; minor thirds; Diminished chords; dominants etc etc and for the most part, I kinda understand at least half of the videos. But there had always been a ‘but what about...?’ A nagging thought in my head (one of my traits unfortunately) that there is something I’m missing, something stopping me from truly understanding this.
As much as I enjoy and mostly understand the other videos, I have to say that honestly, you put all this complicated stuff into such a simple and effective, straight forward way. I don’t know how you do it but thank you. All the questions I have floating around my head, you seem to be answering.

This is perhaps the best explanation of tonics and modes I’ve yet found. I’ve been absorbing as much music theory as I can for the last year or so, but now I finally understand why the tonic matters, and how to use modes to affect the ‘feel’ of the music.
Maybe I’m just slow, but this really did give me a euphoric eureka moment. Thank you.

I wish the drums hadn't been so loud. They kind of drowned out the effect of the lower chords, and I had trouble hearing the tonal center change.

Modal Harmony is really something that is overlooked in UK educational systems such as school or college and it always amazed me why such content was never really taught. Jake nails the content perfectly.
Thanks for the release!

This is an exceptional way of describing modes. I get it...and more importantly...I hear it and feel it. Thank you.

I have seen soooo many videos on modes. It took me a long time to grasp the big deal. Nobody ever showcased it as clearly and concise as this. Everyone learning about modes should see this first! Been following your channel for a while - time to upgrade a youtube subscription to a Patreon subscription

I’ve played around trying to learn the modes and you just made it crystal clear in less than 10 minutes...

I believe before providing this kind of pleasure, a price should be agreed on. I owe you some money, sir.

One of the best demonstrations I have seen. Simple and straight to the point and visually comprehensible. Many teachers get too technical with explaining modes but this is shown in an efficient and clear way.
