The Wellerman (Sea Shanty)【covered by Anna】 [female ver.]

Hello everyone! This week I sang The Wellerman (the sea shanty) by The Longest Johns and like 800 other people!

Ask and you shall receive.

I know I say this all the time but I think I really mean it when I say this is the hardest I’ve worked on a cover ever. Every noise and BG vocal was made completely from scratch, either by the BG vocalists, me, my brother or Jeysun (and his uncle). I did not know true fear until I was pouring water from glass to glass in front of my microphone and laptop.

The BG vocals alone played such a huge part in this cover and I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who said yes to my pleading! I’m so sad that I didn’t get to use all the adlibs and alternate speaking parts everyone recorded because they had me in complete stitches. The cover would be nothing without your drunken singing, so truly, thank you!

And finally, a huge, massive thank you to Jeysun for going absolutely above and beyond with this instrumental. I am so over the moon with how everything turned out and I’m so sorry that you broke your mug while recording the foley (also that you bit into an onion not only once, but twice but I refuse to take any blame or involvement in that choice). You’re a real pal, thank you so much!

What I love about The Wellerman is that everyone has a slightly different version. Whether it's the way the words are sung or the music in the background, it's all unique and it always sounds amazing.

When you listen to the lyrics, you find the song is about a whaling vessel whose captain has sighted a HUGE whale and harpooned it... but has no feasible way to haul it up and kill it because his ship is too small to haul it in close for a shipside kill and he lost his boats in the first attempt at a boating kill.
But out of stubborn pride, he refuses to cut the whale loose because not only would it by a huge amount of money, bringing down a whale that big would be a huge feather in his cap.
Meanwhile, the whale is just dragging the ship randomly around the ocean because he won't cut it loose and can't haul it in (if he tried, he would be hauling his ship under the water after the whale) because it's too small, and his crew are getting angry, hoping the Wellerman (slang term for a resupply vessel from the Weller whale oil company) comes and finds them to bring them their bonus pay (sugar tea and rum) and fresh supplies before they starve. All they can do is that and pray either the captain comes to his damned senses or the whale never decides to take a deep dive and drag the whole ship under... since they have no boats there would be no abandoning ship, they would all just drown.
They've also decided that, should they actually get the damn whale in the end, once the tonguing (cutting the meat into strips and packing it up to deliver for whale oil processing) is done and they've put to port to drop off their kill, screw this prideful idiot, they quit, he can find another crew whose lives he can risk over vanity.
