Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary Stuart defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I. Each young Queen beholds her sister in fear and fascination. Poor Mary suffered at the end. The executioner was drunk and it took 3 chops to sever her head. When he grabbed her hair to hold up her head, her wig came loose and her head fell to the floor. Then her little dog, who was hiding under her skirts, started crying.

Interesting how so many movies have this idealized version of Mary Queen of Scots' execution and of her image at the time. In 1587, Mary was 45, had lost her beauty, gained a lot of weight, and was forced to use a wig to hide her balding, much like her Tudor cousin, so she was as far from Saoirse Ronan as you can possibly imagine.

While Mary did go serenely to her death, as befits a queen, the execution itself was horribly botched, and it took several blows to finish her. The executioner tried raising the head by the hair, which of course then came loose from the wig and started rolling around, to the horror of all the witnesses. And finally her dog, which was hiding in her skirts, burst out of them screaming and gave the audience a final jump scare.

The Helen Mirren Elizabeth miniseries comes closest to the grotesque horror of this spectacle, and still tones it down. Poor thing.

I can't take this movie seriously because of how Margot Robbie ends up looking like an actual clown. It makes the "signing the execution warrant" scene comedic.
Also, Mary was middle aged when she died, not twenty like Saoirse Ronan looks. And the execution was ... rough. Really, really rough.

her death made me sick and sorry for her, she accepted her fate and wanted to end it all when she was told she was guilty and will beheaded, when she went to the scaffold she was already old at the time, yet confident for her inevitable death, when she step on the stage her executioner took a drink before her execution so that he could feel less guilt about it, and he apologize before "killing" her, she accepted his apology, after her speech, she kneeled down on the board then spread her hands and shouted along the lines about god and when the executioner swong the axe, it hit the back of her head and she felt the horror of it she screamed but the executioner instantly re-done his mistake and chopped twice, on his 2nd swing the axe didn't went through her head so he chopped her last remaining piece of neck so it could decap on her body, when he picked it up he hold her hair and her head fell off from the wig she has exposing her grey old short hair, and worst her head roll off on the ground. i hate to think the fact that she died thinking it will just be a short hurt then end to her life but she still experienced the raw pain that the axe had when it hit the back of her head.
