Setting Up Your Mason Bee House

With regard to the advice of securing the tubes and liners in a tight bundle, at a mason bee class run by our local Audubon Society we were advised that bees find their particular tube visually. As such it is beneficial to arrange the tubes in a scattered, irregular pattern, interspersed with various sticks and twigs to allow for more visual variation. This allows the bees to more easily find their specific tube.

I have the Mason's around but they won't use my house. They lay their eggs right above it under the fence post cap

Instead of keeping all the cocoons in a box with a hole, what would happen if I just placed the cocoons straight into the house ?

Also, do they have to have the little box of cocoons or will wild masons find the boxes to get started? Been doing honeybees for years but I would like to add Masons to the mix.

Apparently I didn't put a sign up “For Mason bees only.” I now have wasps or hornets taking up residence in my “Mason bee House.” They have been stuffing what looks like pine tree needles in the holes.
