“Shepherd of the Road” tells the story of a truck driver who guided Angie home during a fierce snowstorm, the very night she joined the band. It was the first song she wrote for Boreal and it perfectly reflects a theme that is prevalent in Canada’s 'fierce' winters: the kindness and resourcefulness of strangers who help us through difficult situations.
Written by Angie Nussey
Performed by Boreal (Katherine Wheatley, Tannis Slimmon, Angie Nussey)
Instrumentation:
Katherine Wheatley - vocals, acoustic guitar
Angie Nussey - vocals, keyboard
Tannis Slimmon - vocals
Sam Cino - drums, percussion
Tyler Wagler - bass
Arranged and produced by Boreal
Recorded at Boreal’s home studios, The Sound Emporium, Bittern Lake Studio
Engineered and mixed by Katherine Wheatley, Tannis Slimmon, Angie Nussey, Lewis Melville
Mastered by João Carvalho
Lyrics:
I was on Highway 11 on a cold winter evening
I left my stop in Barrie without a car in sight
I hadn’t heard the warning not to drive that road
And before I could turn back, I was lost in white
With my wits about me, I tried to pull over
I could see another driver was heading my way
But the plows were on their first run, there was a four-foot shoulder
And I found myself floundering in the middle of two lanes
Chorus:
It was a shepherd of the road who led me home that night
As I watched the cold wind blow in a swirling cloud of white
You can say I just got lucky but in my heart I know
It was a shepherd of the road who brought me home
Two lights flashed, then they moved beside me
Holding my breath, white knuckles of steel
Then two lights flashed again and I began to follow
North wind shielded by 18 wheels
It was all I could do to stay behind it
But when I fell off pace, it seemed to slow
I gave all my trust, let the two lights guide me
A transport truck with a car in tow
Chorus
I woke up early to the clear sun shining
Wondering if truckers know what they do
I drank my tea and stared out the window
Hoping my shepherd made it home too
Chorus
It was a shepherd of the road who brought me home
