The dangers of MIDI FeedBack - THRU and Local control
MIDI is a solid protocol but it still can create havoc if left untamed. MIDI THRU in its virtual form (SOFT THRU of THRU to OUT or else...) can create MIDI feedback that will stop your MIDI device from working. Not breaking it. Just rending the playback unusable. Also What is MIDI Local Control for?

Thanx - allways good to be reminded ! Im up to 8 sometimes 9 units on one clock stream, and this exact problem rode me as a mare for years - finally bit the bullit, got a midi splitter a midi merger and a 1 in 5 out Kenton unit - it helped but theres STILL sheenanigans going on somewhere, and im on a point where a seperat midiclock device is the only sollution left, -

One tip for daisy chaining is to put your drums first in the chain, then bass, then pads. I also tend to keep lead parts off a chain, and played live.

This video actually helped. I was aware of the local control off function but had it turned on as I didn't hear any beats from my drum synth when hitting it. Turned out I had the channel muted in my sequencer and once I activated it, I also got sound, with local control off (with the MIDI signal sent to the sequencer, then back to the drum synth and then it played).

It’s not often that I find a solution to synth issues on my initial search. Thank you

Thank you for this. With my current setup I've been getting midi recordings that are jam packed with a bunch of garbage signals. I just changed the cascade order and initially got some unusual annoying audio blips (clock signal), but after a minute or two everything responded to my controller as expected.
So a tip worth trying is changing the order of how your devices are connected. In fact my behringer had an instruction to not have it last in the chain. Also check your software for modern synths using midi USB to see what is being sent and received and turn off whatever isn't needed

My thru box can switch 3 inputs to any of 10 outputs. I remember when I first got into midi in the late 1980s creating a midi loop on a few occasions before I knew fully what I was doing. Back then thru boxes had a button that when pressed could send an all notes reset message to stop a midi feedback loop that otherwise would repeat indefinitely until you powered down your synthesiser.

Thanks 4 your time to explain it. I know a lot about it, but it's useful every time.
I switched from a iConnectivity Midi 4+ to a simple solution of
2 Keysteps and a Electribe 2s at a Midi Merger and then outgoing over 2 x midi thru boxes to the synths.
So it's not so flexible, but easier to handle my 6 small synths and the ipad. And the ipad is at a iconnectivity audio 4+.
So i can add it to the chain. And if i make no patch errors - no loopbacks ;-) And i could make some funny patches between the Synths if i want.

Thank you, this will be important knowledge at some point I’m sure.

Hey, I would love to have your opinion/advice, I'm having a problem as I need to connect a midi footswitch to change the preset on a synth module but also need to control it with a keyboard (it's only a module, it has no keys) and well... using a midi splitter in the midi in port doesn't work, it seems no synth will accept this setup in the midi in port, like some voltage issue, I have to end up unplugging one of the midi cables from the splitter to make either the controller or the footswitch work but not both, killing the purpose of the splitter, would this unit help? Or how do you solve this setup? Thank you very much

is thunderbolt# or 4 the only connectivity that will provide low enough latency for midi controlling Virtual instruments from an external board? Does USB3 generally work efficiently for middi control? Usb 3.2?

I have issues with being lazy i guess. I am trying to use Korg Kross2 for external hardware controller, and nektar LX49 for Studio One 6 DAW, plugin library. definitely getting some insane results that don't show up as midi data or audio files

Thank you for the exceptional videos!!Subscribed straight away. I have a question if you may. I see you have the microfreak. I midi sync my mc 101 to the rc 505 looper and then midi to microfreak. Is there a setting at the microfreak that when i change the presets and a sequence is loaded, that sequence is not being played??I cant seem to find it..i have the 101 as main instrument and add with a mixer the handpan and occasionally the microfreak. Ony thing is that when im scrolling the presets, when there is a sequence it is being played and i dont really want to erase them, some are really nice. I also tried to midi the freak to the triple delay from tc electronic but i dont think the delay picks up the tempo, i have to tap tempo it soomehow...just ordered that hub you !!!

So when local control is off on a synth with a keybed, how do I do a solo performance on that keybed?

Hi there Nu Trix. Thanks fr the video. Maybe you can help me. I'm having this problem. The feedback is crazy from my new Dreadbox Typhon. The closes I found from what you said was on set up: "MIDI CHANNELS --> INPUT (1-16 or ALL); OUTPUT (1-16 or THROUGH). Output was on through so I setted "1". The feedback stoped imediately and I could hear my ne synth fr the first time. But as I went trought the presets, in a few minutes the feedback was back in full. I changed Output again, back to THROUGH and to 1, but could not get rid of the feedback no more. Frustrating... I tryed also changing the imputs. Nothing worked. It goes fine for several notes and then it starts and I can only stop it turning the synth off.

One way is to use a POWERED midi thru box. I use one made by Amptone. It's great so far. I used to have problems due to not enough power when I used an ordinary non-powered box. One idea if you need more than 4 outs is to connect a quadra to each of the midi outs of the Amptone so you end up with 3 extra midi outs for each connected quadra. The idea is to have all your synths or sound modules always connected. If you always use the same midi channel for each sound module then there is no confusion. I hope you don't get a headache from my bad explanation.
