How Domino's Is Winning The Pizza Wars

Domino's Pizza sales fell a decade ago, but today it's world's biggest pizza company by sales. How did Domino's turn around its fortunes to dominate competitors like Pizza Hut and Papa John's?

For decades, food delivery meant Chinese takeout or Pizza, usually from a local shop or a large chain like Domino's Pizza. That's changed with the rise of food delivery services like Uber Eats, Grubhub, Postmades, and DoorDash. That's bad for Domino's. It might be American's number 1 pie maker, but Domino's Pizza built its business on delivery.

Who knew that improving the quality of the pizza would draw in more sales! Mind blown.

This is the longest Domino's ad I've ever seen

I remember when Domino's quality went downhill. I stopped ordering for several years. When I saw the ad that they improved it, I was surprised that they actually admitted that their product had gone to crap. That sounded sincere to me, so I tried them out again. They weren't lying, it was a completely improved pizza in every way. I remain impressed.

If Dominos is a tech company that happens to sell pizza IKEA is a restaurant that happens to sell furniture.

Yeah, tell that to Gordon Ramsay

Domino's in 2050.
Now the pizza gets teleported into your stomach as soon as it comes out of the oven.

Dominos has also done this really smart thing of partnering with colleges which essentially gets young people to be lifelong dominos customers (myself included)

"We know where you live. We know what are your preferences"

I don't like it when Facebook does that. But for Domino's I approve.

Four reasons for me:
1) Good Pizza
2) Coupons
3) Late Closing Hours
4) Delivery charge is cheaper than other online food ordering apps

To be honest, "30 minutes or free" builds an immense pressure on the delivery guy.

"we know where you live" Dominoes communications chief. Probably shouldn't emphasize that.

9 out of 10 pizza hut stores do not honor their own coupons, that’s why I prefer dominos

None of the major chains were started by Italians...Dominos was started by Irish guys, Papa John is German, Little Caesar’s was started by a Russian and Pizza Hut was started by a Scottish guy

Many years ago Domino's was failing. I mean their pizza sucked. They started a television campaign and went to the people asking them what they'd change. The people spoke and Domino's listened. This is why they are #1 in my area.

Small side story: Domino's franchisee in Peru had an incident around 7 years ago, where customers found cockroaches in their pizza. Suddenly multiple reports of similar higiene issues appeared and people tweeted the stories. The headquarters in the US saw the tweets, reassured action would take place, and a week later they revoked all franchisee contracts, which made the stores to be closed for years. About 3 years ago, someone else acquired the franchise back there and have been slowly reopening the stores, with an open kitchen policy and total update/modernization of the restaurants.

For me it's coupons. $7.99 Large 3 Topping carryout deal. Can't beat that.
