reason is most people use imperial or pieces of it for most early game which usually involves meeting ulfrick and company and starting those quests so it only makes sense that they wouldn’t react so you can join also wouldn’t you take soldiers from an enemy side and learn their secrets? makes sense dude

I guess I just got unlucky because every guard in Windhelm immediately became hostile while shouting ‘imperial scum’

It makes sense, from a mechanics perspective, that the Stormcloaks should be less sensitive to people in Imperial Armour, fact is the base set of Imperial Armour has better stats than the Stormcloak stuff. m
Most people - no matter what side they pick - will end up in Imperial Armour after the tutorial, and - unless they want to smith - might stick with it for a good chunk of the game, it's good light armour for early on. I certainly wouldn't want to have to walk to Windhelm in Stormcloak armour that may as well be made of paper

I think that the overall energy is balanced in relation to the fact that the stormcloaks, most of them are former legion and it would take a bit of pushing to get them to attack you. Cuz their biggest beef is that the empire is completely overrun and puppeted by the thalmor. So that begs the question I wonder if there's any special dialogue if you are a high elf wearing thalmore robes

not me wearing imperial armor from since Helgen til somewhere after the Way of The Voice because I didn't find any better armor up until that point.

One of the civil war quests has you infiltrating as a spy. The commander asks why you're not wearing the right armor. I forget the details, but it was a fun interaction.

Nice to know the stormcloaks have a sense of diplomacy of asing first. Missguided as they are. Still sad Ulfric had to die wish you could persuade him. He is a capable leader of soldiers and his people if he can bring up a rebellion. Using his skills in combat and leadership bac with the empire with a unified skyrim against the real enemy would be invaluable....sadly not the case.

It is scripted like that. E.g. if u join the stormcloaks and everyone would attack you, the main quest (if not done already) would be unsolveable. Hence has to be like this

I was once wearing it walking around the city(Windhelm) and a guard approached me and I had to pay a fine or else be attacked.

I tried this too.(been a long time since I played, but it's Skyrim ain't it?) and I kept the armour from start and chose enemy of what i was wearing and found no issues at all
