A fish or a whale? Here's what swallowed Jonah.

There's been a lot of discussion about whether Jonah was swallowed by a fish or a whale.

The ancient Israelites didn't really understand the distinction between aquatic mammals and our category of fish. In that sense, the book doesn’t address the question at all. It could have been a fish or a whale.

In the world of the book of Jonah, we should really think of it as a sea monster. Whether it was a fish or a whale—or some other creature designed by God for this occasion—the point is that it conjured up ideas of chaos and death.

If you’re looking for the answer to this question, Jesus says it was indeed a whale that swallowed Jonah in Matthew 12:40 KJV. Search the scriptures.

Kevin, thanks for your well-prepared presentation. May I ask a question? What do you think took more courage, Jesus' action at Mt 8:25-27, or Jonah's action at Jonah 1:12 ? (I have an idea, but I'd like to know your idea.)

We know it wasnt a whale. Their throats are too small for him to make it to the belly.

According to Kenneth Wuest New Testament (a literal New Testament translation) in Matthew "for just as Jonah was in the gullet of the sea-monster three days and three nights, thus shall the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights." The ancient Israelites might not have known the difference, but Jesus certainly would've. All things were made through Him after all. 😀

There's two giant prehistoric fishes that were found. Leedsicthys (biggest fish) and Megalodon (biggest shark).

What if Jonah got swallowed by a Leedsicthys?

But the Holy Spirit inspired the writers and it was a fish that swallowed Jonah. This is God we're talking about! Tell me this is impossible. For us yes but with God nothing is impossible.

Jonah is written in the form of prophetic legend, whether it literally happened or not isn’t the highest truth. Our faith in the literal nature of Scripture is solely found in the Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15). The early church saw a four fold reading of Scripture, which included literal, but never said that it was the highest truth. Look at Scripture as literature and you’ll see deep profound truth, and that is what Dr. Youngblood I believe is pointing out. Israel’s Babylonian neighbors struck up the legend of Enuma Elish where the world was created from the death of the sea monster goddess Tiamat. You’ll find much of this language mirrored in the Old Testament, and when you see this could possibly be a cultural-literary motif, you can see deeper levels of inspiration.

Bible says he was in the belly of the fish, a whale or whale shark? Both have narrow throat you couldn't fit to get the belly a big white shark 30 or 40 feet long could swallow a grown man hole today white sharks eat their prey hole so maybe a giant shark over 40 or maybe 50 feet long would be the answer a megalodon
