Humpbacks are definitely my favourite whale; majestic and routinely go out of their way to protect seals from the big bullies of the ocean (orcas) - though belugas certainly have a charming sense of humour.

Fun fact: Humpback whales, for whatever reason, protect a lot of animals from predators, and they use the very hard barnacles on their fins as brass knuckles for any predator trying to attack the animal they are protecting. They even square up to Killer Whales, which are basically the apex predators of the ocean

Barnacles and whales are commensalistic, a form of symbiosis that benefits one and leave the other unaffected, like the bacteria on our skin. Though sometimes they can overgrow, like we can have harmless bacteria on out skin multiply a bit too much. It doesn’t harm them, it doesn’t feel uncomfortable, in fact removing them would cause pain.

Look at the size of those barnacles! Holy cow, I've never seen them get that big! Trust me, I've seen many. I was born raised and still live on an island!

Imagine hundreds of years ago, sailors seeing this pop up beside their boat, before whaling became common place!
all those lumps, then barnicles, & then the noise, ud seriously think its a bad omen or a sea monster for sure!!...
when now fast forward we've learnt so much about these wonderful highly intelligent gentle souls!! 💞
