It was the highest building constructed during the Middle Ages and is an architectural masterpiece. Built over hundreds of years, between 1176 – 1439, Strasbourg Cathedral is radically different from any other Cathedral. It was built using new technologies and according to principles never tested before. For the first time, the researchers were able to trace in 3D the incredible history of this project. They reveal how the builders were able to defy the laws of physics to build higher and higher and explain the importance of iron in this stone cathedral.

Welcome to Strasbourg Cathedral: an exceptional project that lasted 400 years and mobilized the best architects of the Middle Ages. This is the latest episode in ‘Extreme Constructions’ series.

This documentary was produced by Eclectic and directed by Lionel Langdale. It was first released in 2019.

Absolutely incredible and a must see world monument. The city of Strasbourg itself that surrounds the cathedral is a cultural, architectural and engineering masterpiece as well.

You can buy tickets at the échoppe - the cathedral shop - to see the astronomical clock as it swings into action at midday. The explanations of what you are seeing as well as the light projections onto the various working parts are vital in understanding this incredible piece of craftsmanship, as well the column that stands opposite it. There's a small carved dog somewhere under the pulpit that you have to look for, if you find it and stroke it, it's supposed to bring you good luck. They also sell a very interesting DVD in three languages about the clock. Standing on the other side of the square from the cathedral there's the Stonemason's Hall - Oeuvre Notre Dame - where you can also find out about the construction techniques and ongoing repair work that they carry out at the Cathedral.

I know that the St Michel tower in Bordeaux was damaged by lightning many times. Why wasn’t the Strasbourg Cathedral damaged by lightning prior to the invention of the lightning rod?

I can't stand the Cathedrals that are missing a tower/spire. Of coarse it's still amazing, but damn. Get that thing balanced back out! Or the ones that have mismatching towers/spires. Like Chartres is absolutely amazing, but such an eyesore!

My family left there in 1833 to sail to America. Why?
