My mom was helping me clean my room earlier today because my bookshelf got infested with termites and I was playing Night Tempo's Pure Present album, and when this song came up, she started singing along to it and I was surprised. Turns out she used to listen to this through a cassette tape her sisters brought her from their vacation in Japan and this was her favorite. She memorized the lyrics even though she doesn't understand Japanese by pausing after every verse and writing down the syllables of the words. She still has those handwritten lyrics, which were compiled on a binder on the same shelf, but thank god the termites haven't reached yet, and she showed it to me along with other Japanese songs that she used to listen to. She also showed me cuttings of song lyrics from comic books, typewritten lyrics, and songbooks from the 80s. She was 20 years old then and now she's turning 50 in a couple of years. It feels weird imagining my Mom in her 20's in her bedroom listening to City Pop and compiling lyrics, cause it's pretty similar to what I like to do now. She then said, "I was actually hoping you would keep it" as I was just about to ask her if I can have it. They have been on my bookshelf for as long as I can remember but I didn't bother to open what's inside and I don't think I would if it weren't for the termites that started feeding off of my books. Thank's termites. But I'm still pretty upset that they destroyed my vintage Peter Pan book that has sick illustrations and some of my old artworks.
