If I remember correctly 'Monkey Jesus' wasnt done by anyone claiming to be a restorer, but an old lady who was sad at seeing the painting degrade so attempted her own restoration.

As an illustrator, I'm absolutely mortified. These paintings were one of a kid masterpieces, and now they're completely ruined.

In Portugal we have an expression that says "From Spain neither good winds nor good marriages" but also apparently no good restorations!!

This is by the way like the fourth time this happens in Spain, in less than 10 years. There was for example also Saint George.

In recent decades, they started scanning old paintings and painstakingly removing layers of archival overpaint. Having done that, they identified so many botched restorations through the ages that were detrimental to the art piece. So much detail and colour has been revealed like that it's crazy.

When paintings like that Jesus are to be restored The artist is supposed to just color match and fill in the empty spaces. You're never supposed to cover up existing paint.

When I see this, I imagine 70 percent of the people I work with. They are there strictly for the paycheck and nothing else.
