I think he actually shot the puck at net instinctively. Doesn't look like he was trying to shoot the puck behind the net to clear it, it makes no sense. Unless he was trying to clear it to the right of the net which makes even less sense, he shanked that in net thinking he was on offense but suddenly realized that he's playing defense lol.

Nobody is even near him to make such a haste decision so I don't think he was trying to clear it. Tough break for the kid.

Muscle memory at its finest. He didn't try to put it behind the net, he even raises his stick after it went as if to celebrate, it's pure instinct, didn't even realize what he was doing until it was done.

Have to give props to Wheels for his leadership by reinforcing Laine's self confidence, the kid obviously felt terrible about the mistake, but the Captain made sure he tried not to sweat it that much as there was still plenty of time left.
