Niall fails to mention that the 1957 - 1958 economic policies were very different than they are today. The Roosevelt New Deal provided a safety net for economic crisis. We had strong unions with family health benefits. We had pension plans for retirement. President Ike with the help high taxes on the wealthy, built the interstate highway system. This put thousands of people to work. I was 15 years old then and I remember the Economy was strong and we had a positive outlook on life. Reagan and the neoliberals change everything and now we can’t handle a crisis, because in the name of greed we have come to where we are now.

Listening to Niall Ferguson is an excellent example of why governments ask epidemiologist about pandemics rather that historians.

I love to hear someone intelligent like Niall Ferguson speak about the corona virus. Niall basis what he says on facts and not politics and I appreciate that. The fear that people are living with now is astounding and we need to hear from more sane people to put things into perspective.

It significantly degraded the level of TheMunkDebates calling him 'the sharpest mind'. He obviously doesn't know much of the history, at least not an honest way.

It seems all these interviews are months old. This one is from early May. So much has changed.

The 1957-58 pandemic: The estimated number of deaths was 1.1 million worldwide and 116, 000 in the United States. Aug 5, 2020: covid-19 : deaths so far worldwide= 703K and rising (about 8 months in.) USA deaths= 160k and out of control. 2020 numbers are with lockdowns and some inconsistent attempts to control the virus. What would it have looked like with no attempt to control it?

Very interesting. There are many points to Niall's conversation to ponder.

One of the sharpest minds? Rather one of the most extremists minds. He's almost religious in his beliefs.

Ferguson's viewpoint that the world overreacted seems strange from one seeking refuge in Montana. Seems as though he expected more courage from others than from himself.

The Chinese government is just saying "Dude, you can go with whatever choice you make as long as it is fine with you. But just don't force me to get on board with your system. " China has never intended to export its model to any country, it's just saying it got the right to choose ways of doing things by itself.

Is our shutting down of the global economy creating a massive economic underclass who are young, not dying, poor, unemployed and angry.

It appears that the notion of "Chimerica" that Niall Ferguson referred to several years ago is a matter of history now. It's unclear though whether whether globalization and cold war could coexist.
