Did you know that you can be excused from jury duty before the date you are scheduled to appear? It is not difficult if you act promptly and have a good reason. Jury duty is one of our civic duties however those who run the programs for the court- usually called a jury coordinator- understand that the time you are assigned for jury duty is not going to work if that's a day you'll be on your honeymoon or defending your master's thesis or
giving a big presentation. Contact them early, explain the situation and you can probably be excused.

If you are selected to serve on the jury- here is what happens during deliberations

when my kids were very young and I was a widow with no family near me, I got a jury summons. I called and let them know I ran a child care at home and didn't have anyone to replace me or take care of my own kids. I also didn't have a working vehicle at that time. I was told none of that was an excuse and to walk if I had to ( 13 miles away). Apparently my kids were supposed to care for themselves. They were 1 and 3. Thankfully, I didn't get called in, but the stress of that time was unbelievable. I also have OCD and social anxiety.

Why is it so hard for people working in the court system to just accept there are people out there that don't want to do jury duty and try to force them to do it expecting a positive outcome? I don't want to do jury duty because I am poor and having a hard time buying food and paying bills.

Trying to travel to some stupid court house everyday for as long as a trial goes on to listen to lawyers ramble on while throwing out objections multiple times is not something a poor person like me needs to be doing. I need to be here trying to focus on the things I need to do and trying to find ways to make money instead of making my life situation worse because some idiots in the court system think they know better than me on what I should be doing when I leave my home.

This is truly sickening and people really need to push to do away with this "forced civic duty" BS and do as another person in the comments said and make this 100% voluntary only instead of being forced to try to come up with ways to get out of it because some idiot holding their nose up high thinks this is what we should do no matter what our situations in life are.

Easiest way out is tell them you cannot be fair and impartial when the judicial system and law enforcement cannot be fair and impartial... that excused me immediately yesterday lol.

Why can't people just volunteer for jury duty? My job depends on me and i really can't afford to be away from work...

This shit is outrageous! I have social Anxiety and a leaning disability and they STILL denied my claims even with a proof letter. I have to still show up for jury duty on the date I was given. It's beyond pathetic.

IMO, jury duty should be a voluntary act and not mandatory with the threat of jail at the barrel of a gun. Jury Duty = Involuntary servitude!

I had jury duty. I went for nothing because when we had orientation, afterwards we took a break when we came back the case had already settled before we even stepped in the court room. I was furious! We all wasted our time and money. We lost a day's work. The wost thing is that we still on call until the end date. This is slavery!

I've been chosen for jury duty 6 times in my life so far. I sat there in the waiting room for often times more than 1/2 a day and never once got picked to serve. Extremely boring, uncomfortable, and a big waste of my time, money for parking, and gas to get there.
Some of the people that DID get called to go into the courtroom, to be a potential juror, looked questionable to me. I would've been worried if they were on a jury that was about to judge me. 😬

In my jury response paper, I told them if I was selected I needed an extra large chair due to my weight and have a medical condition that requires my use of the restroom up to twice an hour, with no prior warning. I was excused and have never been asked again

If you do have to go but don't want to be selected, just mention FIJA or jury nullification and you will not be selected. In fact, mentioning either in front of other prospective jurors will get them excused as well.

I wish the court would leave me alone and quit sending their garbage paper work to fill out to me.To me jury duty is a waste of time and I am not made for this.sitting in a chair for a day is a waste of time doing nothing at all. This is how I see it.

Very nice. Extremely helpful. I know this was five years ago, but congrats for providing an avenue for those of us with legit concerns.

They should pay jurors, you don't need to do jury duty for pocket change to do civic duty, they treat jurors {pee ons} just a step above the accused ! Every other so called public servant in the court house is getting six figures { and loaded with self importance} to be there.

If you have to use the restroom, they will not permit you to leave the courtroom. Do they expect you to sit there with your soiled underwear and still stay focused on everything else?

I am a self employed single-op contractor, I work with clients to run entertainment services within the night club industry several nights per week. I work from 4pm to 2am every day, so not only does serving on a jury impact my biological schedule, it means that if I have to serve for more than a week, someone else will be hired to take over my contract in my absence, and there is no guarantee that I would even have that job when I returned. I explained this to the judge, yet I am still compelled to serve. This could potentially cost me my lively-hood. There IS no justice.

If they reject my excuse and say that I must go, screw it, I'll show up wearing my Lysander Spooner shirt.

What do I do if they refuse to listen to my doctor who has filled out their forms TWICE saying that I can NEVER serve on a jury because of my medical conditions? They keep sending summons' and are forcing me to show up under duress or face fines I cannot pay or face jail time for something that is not even a crime against my doctors orders because it's something I physically and mentally CANNOT do! They are not only forcibly putting me in a position that will cause me bodily harm, but will also violate my 13th Amendment right that protect me against involuntary servitude. I can't find a lawyer that is willing to take my case against them because they're all in cahoots. They should have no right to do this! Any help would be appreciated.
