How to make easy 3d text in Gimp

How to make 3d text with minimal effort.

I don't know what you guys are all complaining about, I've watched a bunch of his vids and i don't have any complaints about how fast he goes through it, his camera work, or anything. To me, the vids are great and i learn a lot from them.

I have the answer!!! Your own work dumped that pattern too. I was able to correct this by skipping the pattern-applied step until the blended text was finished at 5:12, then I had to go back to the ellipse tool, carefully selecting again the top area where the pattern would not be applied (if this was the effect which was intended, looks ok to me), and then I did a Select -> Inverse. This enabled me to apply the pattern to the bottom half, as stated in the video.The pattern is really for texture, and it does make a difference.

Thanks for posting this, even if you haven't really done it for us poor slugs who need it, and haven't since been bothered with updating it or correcting errors. I still learned a lot about using Gimp, even it took me a whole afternoon backtracking all over this much-too-quick video to get there. It's worth it for the tool use and tricks which it shows, if you don't know them already, and each is likely more valuable in their own right than to the end which it reaches now that scripts such as 3D Extrusion are available - l'll be tackling that next.

Thank you for making the tutorial for us, now I have a question. While I was trying to follow your tutorial, I can't seem to find that reverse option on 5:03 in gradients. I downloaded GIMP 2.8. Where is it?

How did you do the reverse blend at 4:52 without losing your dot pattern? You made a huge ado ado about this pattern (I'm of the Stanley Kubrick school of detail, so please don't tell me it isn't required when you can see it at all), and since neither that download nor the site Imageshack exists anymore, I created it again from scratch. Miming your actions with the mode Normal, that last blend step painted right over my dots. Putting it in Overlay mode kept the pattern, but the colors were way off. Please help if you can, anybody!

it selects the item on that layer
so if you have text and you click alpha to selection then it will select the outline of the text
