Why The Apple Watch Ejects Water

If you’ve ever seen a blue water drop on your Apple Watch telling you to turn the digital crown to unlock and eject water, then you’ve probably wondered why the feature exists. Well it’s called water lock, and it’s exclusive to the Apple Watch since it’s designed to be used while swimming and showering. But there are some issues with constantly submerging an electronic device under water.

Nicely explained. I also took the apple watch for a swim and although the speakers sounded jittery after coming out of the water, after a few hours and some water eject button presses, it was functioning nicely. Glad to have that peace of mind!

Why does apple not hire Greg to make some explanation videos for their products, he does it amazingly.

If a company is offering water resistance on it’s devices then that should be a deterrent for a splash or unexpectedly getting caught in a rain shower.
But as a consumer, there’s always a part of us that wants to push things to the limit.

I used to work at my local apple store as a genius. My friends always ask me why the iPhone doesn't support the apple pencil, I'm sure you're also asked often. It'd be cool if you made a video about it and here's the reasons: Number 1: There are hardware capabilities, the ipad is built with a special display that supports and recognises the movements of the pencil. Number 2: The size. The largest iPhone has a 6.7 inch display and the apple pencil 2nd generation is about 6.5 inches long and the 1st generation is 6.9 inches long. Its too large to sit comfortably on top of an iphone to wireless charge and too long to sit inside the lightning port. Thirdly: It just doesn't look appealing to see someone on their iphone with a white thing hanging out of the botttm and the it doesn't match any of the colours of the flagship iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Lastly: The iPad battery is much larger and takes 15 seconds to charge an apple pencil for half an hour whereas an iphone would take about 7 minutes to charge the same amount. It takes 28 times the charging time. It is rumoured that in the next few years, apple will drop the iPad mini from the lineup in favour of a large display iphone with pencil support. Hope this helps for a potential video, hopefully if it did get made into a video, my friends would stop pestering me about it.

I hope the oscillation tone when unlocking water mode can be longer. I often find myself having to repeatedly turning water mode on and off in order to eject all water which is a bit annoying.

Something we've been to scared to test is "Will it be okay in salt water?" I'm still pretty curious about if it'll be okay

It's not exclusive to Apple.
My old Samsung Galaxy Watch has this too. Including the automatic lock, warning and speaker usage to get the water out.

Nice informative video. Just to correct one thing, it isn't the only watch with that feature. Galaxy Watch4 does the same.

1) I’ve read not to wear in the shower due to the soaps and shampoo breaking down the seal just as said in the video.
2) I always rinse my watch off with freshwater after swimming in the ocean with it. Salt water is corrosive.
3) anyone else hear the sound playing in their head of the watch unlocking when it showed the image of the water coming out the side speaker?

It will never turn on automatically unless it thinks that you're working out; in that case it will lock you from using the screen right before asking you if you want to record a workout. This forces you to stop exercising to unlock the watch while it is out of the water and scroll down to the button to start a work out. After that you have to relock it.

This isn't exclusive to the Apple Watch, it's available on my Galaxy Watch 4 as well

I always enable water lock manually because even though it turns on by itself, it's nice you have that peace of mind that it will be ok if you put it in water.

Water lock is not exclusive to Apple Watch though. My galaxy active has it too.

I sometimes wonder if Greg will ever run out of Apple-centered topics to make videos about. But videos like this one remind me that it’s going to be a long time – if ever – before that happens.

(And please don’t think I’m saying anything negative about videos dealing with super niche content. I actually find them fascinating and love watching them!)

Quick fact: the frequency the watch produces is around 160 Hz.

Just asking. He said that its gor Iphone only. Samsungs galaxy watch basically does the same, maybe a bit differently. It turns off tojch screen, plays sound to eject water, and turn on automatiaclly. Then why did he say its for Iphone only?
