I think Tomiki (Shodokan) aikido is the most effective form of aikido as they've come up with such sparring practices...

Why isn't THIS the more popular aikido???

There are three HUGE LESSONS we can takeaway from Tomiki / Shodokan competition aikido:
1 -- Competition is VITAL to all martial arts. It's where the talk stops and what is actually effective rises to the surface.
2 -- If you are in a knife fight you are going to get stabbed on average 5 times or MORE. 2-a. :DON'T ever get in a knife-fight!
3 -- You don't need 50 techniques. You only need about 5 that you are really good at and are SIMPLE and effective! 3-a: SIMPLE techniques are ALWAYS better: "I fear not the man who has practiced 10, 000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10, 000 times." -- Bruce Lee.
I wish we had Tomiki Aikido here in Germany - would sign-up immediately!
It really is "Where the rubber meets the road" - all other aikidos are "demonstration aikidos" or worse; "dance katas".

I study both Akido from the Fugakukai lineage (an offshoot of Tomiki Aikido) and Judo. I think they should combine them both and call it AikiJudo and have the full spectrum of techniques in competitions such as toshu randori.

Here, as in any sporting match, there are a number of limitations to avoid injury.
The purpose of a sport competition is to show the dynamics of Aikido, using the opponent's movement and not the application aspect of Aikido (rubber knife is a conditional weapon that allows you to keep distance between the opponents).

What on earth is that fuzzy stick they are holding? Is it supposed to represent a knife? They are all dead. Four or five stabs before an awkward throw.

Seems like the real deal. I would gladly learn it if it was available at my town.

I don't get the rules though. Why does it seem like the attacker just stands there once the wrist is grabbed? Are they not allowed to retreat or attempt to escape the grab?

Yes there are some fancy throws there... pretty much all at the expense of a fatal stab/slash wound.

I respect Aikidokas that spar instead of just doing katas/practicing without resistance. I hope this style gets more traction.

They should do it with a colored marking tip... preferably red.

In most of the clips, the tori got 'stabbed' several times until they could execute a throw. lol

How long would this take to learn to become decent at street self defense compared to how long it would take to learn judo for self defense? And which one would be more effective on the street?

Pressure testing through competition teaches things that cannot be taught with just learning kata.

So having the knife basically means you lose right?

Funny how it doesn't resemble the regular or kata form of aikido... so what's the use of those demonstrations if they're not even close to what it would look like in a real situation
