Nobody has came to accomplish anything. Live your life. Enjoy what you need to enjoy. Do what you have to do. And beware of people who have made your well-being their business

Life isn't hard because it's easy. Life is hard because we're built for a simple life with limited choices. Get food, take care of family, have leisure time. Modern life is inundated with options and things that we can and WILL miss out on. We are not built to have so many options and so many responsibilities: work, school, social life, keeping up with social media, needing to "hustle", needing to relax, needing to stay connected to daily that is hundreds of miles away. The ease of life has made our responsibilities skyrocket.

I think easy/hard are relative, its difficult to overgeneralize. I would imagine this (very generous) context being within a well-developed country where "most" physiological needs are met "most" of the time with relative ease. It comes down to different needs. You find ppl well off financially easily overwhelmed with things that ppl who've had to struggle their way through life not even bat an eye at. Everyones had their own story that made them who they are and how resilient they've become.

I think the crisis my generation has to deal with is that of fighting for purpose/passion. I find its far too easy to be complacent, disillusioned and feel lost more than ever. We dont have any great wars to fight, or anything "great" or "noble" to attach ourselves to thats immediately obvious. Thats why you see so many in the genz/millenial generation trying to find their footing in where they find their place in life and what it is they're even here for.

I always point out to my husband that people think having a washer and dryer is a giant help compared to the old days, but if you think about it, instead of beating 3 outfits across a rock, we have 14x as many clothes due to accessibility, and now i dont know a mom out there who can skip a load of laundry without it backing up like rushhour traffic. We gained a 'convenience' and with it came an unforeseen, never ending chore. 😵‍💫

It depends on the individual and how they abuse the topic listed. Porn and drugs have never been a problem for me, I simply never used them as a way to escape. But video games, yea, I could numb out for hours playing those. I’m a bit older, I’ve known individuals who literally lost their job and family due to spending all their time and money on Everquest. It’s not the category that is the point, the point is how the category can be abused on a case by case basis.

I get this

But it's also harder because of the economic system which is built to make the rich richer. Inequality means we the rich get richer everyone else gets poorer.

Then that inequality allows for greater political power and it all goes to hell. Austerity politics, business consolidation means less competition which means consumer loses.

We we have is not abundance, it is artificial scarcity meant to profit the few

Some of the bad stuff doesn't feel really good (toothache) and some of the good stuff doesn't feel really bad (taking shower). Its just that there are enough seemingly random cases that are.

We’ve been conditioned to expect hard things that require work to be easy, and when it’s not we become discouraged so easily.

It's like how playing videogames as a kid felt more exciting than as an adult. As a kid, there was school, chores and bedtime to deal with, but when you're in charge and can play anytime you want, you don't crave it as much and you get used to it

These aren't bad things. Everything in moderation. They're completely neutral things that predictively become harmful when we use too much. Those tasty things in "bad food" are crucial for your survival, and only taste that good because where you come from as an ape, they were scarce. The things we see as good would kill us if we used, ate, saw, touched, or drank them too much.

Been saying this for years. It's like we're playing Minecraft on peaceful mode, and people get so bored they just start destroying shit (griefing)... Wether it's other people's shit or their own (eg. eating unhealthily destroys oneself).

The worst part is already knowing exactly why I feel like shit, what I should do to help myself, and still being incapable of doing it and knowing exactly why I'm failing at it and how I can fix it and yet... XD wild ride ya'll

I make a similar point to people of an older generation who say "young people have it so easy." Although it is true on the surface I implore them to consider that the "easy life" is essentially a neglectful, purposeless, enabling drug addiction times 10.

Yeah, I don't have to go hunt a deer for dinner but I stare into an empty void trying to find challenges in a culture of spoiled pathological people who simultaneously suffer from the hubris of thinking they deserve the easy life while they don't consider that the easy life is melting away their souls.

I've worked my fair share of 16 hour days, I've felled trees, I've pushed big logs, I've butchered chickens for dinner. It ist physically easy but at the end of the day the void in your chest and psyche is filled.

The ease of the past was that meaning flowed through the repition of goals and obstacles to overcome. The ease of the present is that all of our physical needs are met much more simply.

But it wasn't an advancement overall in my opinion when it comes to humanity as a whole. We sacrificed the ease of the spirit and the burden of the body FOR the burden of the spirit and the ease of the body.

It guess it comes down to self control and self discipline.

Recreation such as board games, fictional reading, theatre etc has always existed. People who don't want to work and only want to recreate have also always existed. The problem isn't the game, it's the people who play them. Once you know that, the true question arises, "Why are you this way?" Once THAT question is asked, the answer to substance abuse, game addiction, sexual addiction, can all be answered. Video games, sex, and drugs aren't bad, abuse is. There's always a reason why it's abused that's way more important.

So the key is moderation; and then those "bad things that make us 'feel good'..." Will be neutral/good for us?

I feel like video games being thrown into that list is a little harsh
