There have been a number of instances of people using the lightsaber in one hand, but usually it's only for one or two moves, or to show how strong they are.

It's not until you get into the supplemental material like the clone Wars, the books, etc. Etc. Where you see the extensive periods of one-handed usage.

But even within this, none of it actually takes advantage of the unique properties of one-handed weapons.

It would be really cool to see lightsaber fights designed with the advantages of one-handed versus two-handed in mind

Using Light Saber one-handed is also useful since the free hand could be used for *FORCE* pull/push/chock, as we see Vader often do.

Vader fights with 1 hand. He’s the only guy that consistently understands “I should use the Force as a weapon with my other hand.” That makes him badass

In Clone Wars, Dooku actually uses his saber in a proper fencing posture, with his other arm behind his back, only taking it out to catch his opponents off-guard with the Force, and otherwise using footwork to move out of the way of attacks and such.

Just another detail that makes Clone Wars an absolute materpiece.

George Lucas had told to actors to always hold it in two hands. He wanted it to be like a greatsword/Excalibur. The props were also really heavy so the actors probably wanted to hold them with two hands anyway.

It is worth noting that in the original trilogy they had the idea that lightsabers were heavy, and it was in later material it was changed that they were lightweight.

I mean, in lore they also had different forms that had basic explanations:

Form 1 was mostly two handed because it was basically the "basics" of sword fighting.

Form 2 was based around fencing-one that was slightly altered in lore for Sir Christopher Lee. It used to be purely one on one basics-but Sir Christoper Lee was an expert Fencer so Lucas made Form 2 work more like that.

Form 3 was when blasters became more popular. It was basically well-using the sword like a shield and deflecting the laser bolts back, and in a duel you wait until your opponent makes a mistake and counter.

Form 4 was constant onslaught by attacks, mostly dodging with a few blocks when you couldn't dodge. The idea was to finish the fight quickly be constantly putting your foe on the Backfoot .

Form 5 relied on parties, blocks, and powerful counterattack and powerful strike.

Form 6 was basically meshing all the things that worked in the previous forms into one. Form 6 could be highly varied if a user hasn't learned the basics of other forms, and basically was "a jack of all trades: master of none". The effectiveness actually relied on the skill of the user.

Form 7 was aggression. Giving into the thrill of combat. Doing everything to overpower your opponent

Wow, you guys make lightsaber fighting look amazing. If the lightsaber fight scenes in the movies were choreographed with the same moves as you guys, the fighting scenes would have been even more suspenseful and spectacular. Just you guys sparring to show us examples was super cool to watch.

It is important to remember that people who did primarily use one handed lightsabers had the strength to back it up, Vader for example had his, poorly made, but still mechanical arms allowing him to overpower a lot of his enemies without much effort or a need for both hands leading to some people even calling his form lazy

someone give these 2 a budget and let them make a good Star Wars movie.

I love watching people that are professionals at sword fighting styles when they use lightsabers, it looks so natural and fluent

According to canon, the lightsaber has a centrifugal effect. There is a gyroscopic effect that makes the saber somewhat difficult to maneuver. That is why the saber is recommended to have both hands on the saber. Because of the components in the saber, it is actually rather hefty, so two-handed use is necessary for these two reasons.

That quick demonstration was really cool. I want to see more of you two doing lightsaber duels

This kind of stuff is why the lightsaber battles on YouTube are way better than the ones in the movie.

This is probably the most informative analysis of lightsaber combat I've ever come across. No guessing at in-lore explanations, just "here's two primary staples of swordfighting, without the problem of blade weight".

There's also a gyroscopic effect to the blade of the lightsaber. It pulls. Once you get a lightsaber moving, it doesn't want to stop. Using two hands helps you to control that effect. The characters still need to use the force to amp their strength in order to control their blades, but using two hands makes it easier to control the blade while using less force power.

This is why you hire professionals to choreograph fights so they look like fights not elaborate dances with deadly weapons as an accent
