It's funny because in the starwars universe there first lightsabers looked exactly like this

Time to put a magnetic field around the plasma to make it more condensed plasma, so it can cut things quickly like a blade by being in a more solidified version of plasma, making it more blade like and less torch like that looks cool, the magnetic field would essentially solidify the plasma as much as possible, keeping it in a state of plasma, still allowing the plasma to hit it's target while condensing that plasma
