Install Your Favorite Desktop Linux Apps With A Simple Bash Script

IN THIS VIDEO:
Like to check out various Linux distributions but hate reinstalling all your favorite software? Click the easy button with a simple bash script! And yes, I'm an idiot! The correct "she-bang" format is:
#!/bin/bash -- but the script should still work. Live and learn folks :D

IMPORTANT NOTE: Some distributions may not give you the option to automatically run your script in the Terminal. If not, open up your Terminal app (search “Terminal” in the activities screen or menu). Browse to the location you saved it by entering "cd" (which means change directory) and the folder name (Documents, Desktop, etc).

To display a list of files in your current location, type “ls.”

Then to execute your script, type “./myscriptname”

OOPS! In the video I wrote "!#/bin/bash"
The correct format is: #!/bin/bash -- but the script should still work. I'm still a noob too! Live and learn folks :D
I apologize for the error!

Well done. You establish a warm and welcoming tone while keeping the video concise. I find this sort of five-minute instruction very valuable...thanks, Jason, and I'm looking forward to many more such videos!

This is probably the best timing for a tutorial I've ever seen. You made this look easy with simple clear instructions with people like me in mind. As always I love the music, OH YEAH!

This was exactly the question i was looking to answer and the moment i saw you open pepermint 10 i knew i was in for a treat. Peppermint was my first distro and my gateway to linux. I really miss the old pm10 and literally installed it in a VM last night just for kicks and memories. Thanks for the help. Gonna try and write a script to help run all my gaming tweaks for Linux mint.

Taking your settings and preferences for each program with you in such an easy way is also a nice video for you to make. Nice one!

Thanks! I'm just learning about scripts and this video helped me understand what a script actually does and what possibilities there are with it.
Really helpful! Thanks!

While I'm not a distro hopper per say, I do often set up a number of machines in a similar manner. This is something I've been looking at doing for a while, just never took the time to do it. Just wrote a test script on my phone to try when I get to a fresh install tonight or this week. :-D Thanks for the kick in the pants to be productive and work smarter not harder.

This helped give me half the solution to fresh install anxiety with stable distros. The next half is my personal data and the files easily being restored, which you conveniently have another video on...

But I fear it might not cover -where- we should have files stored to make upgrades as painless as possible for programs. Or where they are and how it's a concern.

For example, if I fresh install Joplin, then fresh restore my files, I want to open Joplin right to my previous notebooks without any extra work!

Hi. Is there a way to run apt update in bash without problem?

Have you had any luck using the Jack audio server when Pulseaudio is the default? I can't get Jack to work in Tumbleweed.

Which Video editor did you use with those animated transitions?
