Ranger is one of my favourite classes tbh. I like playing that socially awkward guy who’s lived in the wilderness for a long time and isn’t very well accustomed to civilised life. And besides, using a bow is pretty damn cool.

My favorite ranger that I've played was a Fey Wanderer that was more akin to an adrenaline junky prankster than a ranger. Dude's affinity with nature would come in when he'd flee into the Feywild or the Woods when jobs finished lol

To everyone who says rangers are bad, Hunters Mark + Colossus Slayer. Multiclass Blood Hunter for extra damage as well and then you can be a party pseudo-healer.

The base skill of a ranger is to situational unless the campaign is based in their home terrain

The challenge of rangers is they are three-way hybrid. They have utility, martial and magic.
My only issue with favored terrain is it depends on your DM understanding geography.
That he understands, a forest terrain is a temperate climate and that grasslands means a steppe climate. These are two biomes that cover large areas of Earth and have vastly different plants and animals.

Yeah TCoE really adds a lot of useful and cool subclasses especially for a ranger (I love swarm keepers)

One of the gripes for the class is Favored Enemy and Natural Explorer abilities they get, you have to pick a specific creature type and a terrain and get bonuses when fighting that type of enemy or are in that terrain. So unless you're going to be spending most of the campaign in that specific terrain or are going to be going up against a specific type of creature those bonuses are pretty much useless.
One of their sub-classes grants them the ability to have an animal companion, but to use them you have to give up your actions to command them. They should have designed Beast Master so that the Ranger and their Animal Companion act in the same Initiative, player decided who goes first or last, so they can act in unison together.

Rangers are awesome if built right. I had one that had such high stealth that he auto passed most checks, even sneaking past a shadow dragon seven times. Not to mention hord breaker combined with the right spells was just nasty. One of the most dangerous characters I ever played. Let's not forget his +11 to

Rangers are the best class to play with a new DM or a new setting. You can plug them in anywhere and have them fit seemlessly, and their versatility helps them adapt in ways that even rogues cannot
