That time I probably should NOT have landed

Big lessons learned after I failed to go around on a dirt strip in the Australian Outback. See the landing and watch why I shouldn't have landed and gone around for another approach instead. Filmed in the cockpit and from the wing in a Cirrus SR22.

This isn't an extreme aborted landing but a full power go around would have been a better option. See why a missed approach would have been a better outcome.

Aircraft is a Cirrus Aircraft SR22 G3 VH-EYZ from Moorabbin Airport.

Hi Steph, I live in Mt Isa, I fly a caravan in and out of a dirt strip 3-4 times per week. Its Patrice and time. Believe me you did well. You can make improvements, but don't beat your self up about this. Gravel and dirt strips take time to get used to, especially if you are used to proper aerodromes. There are so many variables, so many things that can go wrong or rite. I am 37 and have landed on gravel many hundreds of times. I flew in New Guinea for 10 years and learned after that experience the only thing for it, is time and practise. Learn to love the unexpected, trust your abilities, go arounds are always an option, the ground is not going anywhere. But! take a win when you get it! No one consistently butters gravel except the old timers. You will get there. Time and practise.

I remember that flight and assumed the long landing was deliberate. My home airport (Kamloops CYKA) has an enormous runway (8000 feet) and we routinely land long to get to taxiways quickly. When I was learning to fly (Langley CYNJ) we only had 2100 feet of runway to play with and you had to land on or just after the numbers.

A very interesting video analysis. In aircraft accident investigations, it is never one specific thing that causes an accident. It is usually multi events coming together that lead up to the final outcome. Your analysis shows exactly that, well done..

Nice video, glad we can all learn from this, luckily it went ok. Have a great day!

One thing I find tricky going from a Piper to a Cirrus is braking to turn the aircraft, especially when going out of a turn to go straight again.
Maybe do a vid as most viewers probably don’t know this.
Safe flying!!

I didn’t think there would be so many considerations that come with landing and taxiing on dirt/gravel surfaces. Very interesting! Looking forward to your video on ATC at Sydney Intl, from the clips shown it looks like a very interesting perspective into the daily operations there. Congratulations again on 100, 000 subscribers, awesome stuff! Hope you have a good evening :)

Nice one Stef. Check out the wing tip vortex in the dust coming off the starboard wing at 6:28

Thank you for sharing, shows again how important the approach briefing is also for known airports

Well done Stefan. Once you learn to self criticise EVERY flight, you are well on your way to being a professional pilot.

Well Done on 100k! Lockdowns might be a good opportunity to dig up some old footage or any footage that you weren’t comfortable sharing until now. Looking forward to the ATC vid!

Great work Stef. You should do a meet up at YMMB when we’re out of this LD. I’m learning to fly out of Tooradin the place you should never land!

Interesting watching this, i have only ever flown from gravel strip, though parking and run up area is grass which is good.
