This song brings to mind this very famous quote.

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?” - Epicurus

Alot of people seem to think this song is about blaming god. I see it more as someone giving their reason for not being able to believe in god.

To me this song felt like a person of religion turning away from their faith to become an atheist. It feels like a last prayer, an explanation to not only "god" but to themselves too.

I think its groovy.

For all those people who think this song is about beliving in god.

This is a cover, I believe XTC made it. This is apperently actual words they've said about the song "it failed in part, because it wasn't as caustic as I would've liked it to be. It should've been a nail in throat of the public, but instead some took it as a declaration of faith when I wanted to make it clear that I don't believe in God - and that even if there is a He or a She they have nothing to do with organized religion." So there you have it, It's about not beliving in god. Or at least having a harsh view on religion today. Basically the song is atheist agnostic.

The whole song feels like a journey. 3:27 to the end is my favorite part and is amazingly suited to the previous lyrics. It makes me feel just how I did in my short but huge momment of tears and anger, when it finally clicked and I mentally + emotionally decleared to myself that I had lost faith in this religion (Islam) that I had spent my whole life dedicated to. The rage, frustration and hurt are blended together so perfectly. But at the same time it felt like being born again, being born into reality and/or finally having a thick sheet torn away from your eyes. It's incredibly beautiful, and I am extremely greatful for this piece of work.

Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
Dear God
I hope you get the letter and
I pray you can make it better down here
I don't need a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving on their feet
'Cause they don't get enough to eat from God

[Pre-Chorus]
I can't believe in you

[Verse 2]
Dear God
Sorry to disturb you, but
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet about God

[Pre-Chorus]
I can't believe in you

[Verse 3]
Dear God
I don't know if you noticed but
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
And us, crazy humans wrote it. You should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
Still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't and so do you

[Pre-Chorus]
Dear God
I can't believe in, I don't believe in

[Verse 4]
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
And if there's one thing I don't believe in

[Outro]
It's you, dear God

I'm religious but wow this song is pretty interesting, always refreshing to see such brilliant lyrics, artists voicing their opinions and feelings that's what it's all about

I love songs about religion that aren't preachy. This really feels more like an atheist's hymn for not believing.

Dear God, I hope you get the letter and...
I pray you can make it better down here

But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving on their feet

I can't believe in you

The changes from minor to major key and back again over and over makes the finale of this song frickin' epic.

This song reflects society nowadays more than all the popular songs do, and yet somehow this one stays under the radar...
