Can an Ultralight 4' Drone Survive Gale Force Wind!?

I'm in love with this little drone, but I have doubts that it will work in really high winds. I was waiting around for the wind to stop so that I could film a different video, but I started thinking: how much is too much?

Long-range and high-altitude flight are definitely aspects of FPV that attract me -- same feeling as exploring the backyard forest as a kid.

That’s not insane wind. That’s a gentle breeze.
Have you been outside, ever. :)

That was pretty awesome! That little guy has got some balls. You had a lot of faith in that thing Nurk. Now I gotta check out the last video bc I’m behind and gotta get caught up on a few vids. ✌️

About Li-ion batteries: I've used VTC6, you can charge them to 4.2v, and push down to about 2.6v under load (however it's better to discharge them to about 3.0-2.9 under load)

Glue a little micro servo onto a 360go so you can start the recording from a switch on the radio

I've really been considering the Flywoo so it's helpful to see how it does. I understand the marketing value of the 'gale' title, but I prefer to know accurate estimates of wind speed whenever I fly. This is probably a Moderate Breeze (4) 13-18 mph or at most a Fresh Breeze 19-24 mph. I would be hesitant to fly much above 20-25, especially above water, and you are braver than I. A true Gale force (8) wind is defined as 39-46 mph (impeding walking). Thanks again!

I'm excited that you're trying the Outcast Droneworks 4S pack. I haven't gotten to try the 4S, but I have one of the original 2S 3250 mAh packs. I used the 2S pack on my "big" 3" freestyle build that usually runs on 4S 650. I was able to squeeze on some gentle HQ 4x2x2 props, and I came in at just barely under 250g with a Caddx Turtle and GPS.

My first test flight was 6 miles in 19 minutes. Then 6 miles in 12 minutes. Then 6 miles in 10 minutes. It seems to always be 6 miles no matter how fast I go.

I never had any good plans on what to do with this setup, but it was cool that it could manage such long flights.

If you need to get LQ in your DJI OSD you can pipe it through an AUX channel and put it on screen by selecting RSSI Value in the OSD tab. Just pick a channel in the Crossfire menu and select LQ

i believe LiIon can actually go way lower than that. i thought it was like 2-2.5v

Thank you very much for your video! I have also flown 2 kilometers with a 3-inch drone and the DJI system. I have done it with the DJI control and it did not lose signal at any time! Since I saw the distance at which it reaches, I use it with my drones, greetings!

Those are pretty cool antennas, but my first thought was that theyre placed right up against the metal faceplate, which surely must affect the waveform boundary condition.

I do not do YouTube videos (yet) and I only have three camera drones, but I can tell you from experience that “Return to Home” although this one doesn’t come home and land per say can get you in trouble if engaged and “home” is under trees like where you took off from in this video .I think I would have calibrated the compass out from under trees in a more open area. That said I really like this drone, and your video was awesome. Long range intrigues me because on the one hand you can see where the drone is on the map, where it is going in the goggles, and in your flight here probably the drone itself with binoculars LOS, but technically not LOS to the naked eye for something that small. Finally I noticed in your goggle video that the outside 1/4 of the screen on each side when you were low over the water was quite blurry, is that normal for the DJI digital video? Keep up the great work man.

I’ve tried to fly my explorer to the top of peaks and it definitely blows it around. Now I’ve been using the explorer to scout lines and just exploring the mountain at new spots.

I was wondering how this would do in the wind, thanks for testing it out.

Very cool flight of the little 4" it looks so "petite" :), except the honkin' Li-Ion batt on its back. May have to give this one a try once I get through my current projects. Thanks for recording this on vacation, now go have a cold one!

Would I fly that distance? No way..but I don't have your skills either. High winds are always sketchy. SIde-bar question..how do you only have 88.7K subs? You've gotta have other channels my man. Keep up the great work!
