Are raisins a good yeast nutrient in mead? What is yeast nutrient anyhow? Yeast need assimilable nitrogen to carry out their fermentation business. This can come in the form of cannibalizing other yeast hulls, or factory-produced nutrients like Fermaid-O, Fermaid-K, diammonium phosphate (DAP), and Go-Ferm. But are RAISINS a good yeast nutrient? No. Not at all. This video was made for those who want a YouTube link that isn't a half hour long. But, the SCIENCE is down below👇

What nutrient do you use in mead? Let us know in the comments!

Thumbs up this video if you have a three-panel canvas print from Kohl’s that says NUTRIENT FEAST, HAPPY YEAST, BREWING BEAST

Most informative 44 second video on mead ever made. Teaches a solid principle lol.

OMG, I LOVE this video!!! It perfectly illustrates the complete and total response to the question "Are raisins nutrients?"

I don't use them as a yeast nutrient but as a way to give the wine a better mouth feel. For me it gives my wine a thicker viscosity, not as watery. Add raisins with yeast nutrients, never had a problem with them.

First "no, " I was like really? First "they're not" I was skeptical, second "they're not" I was wavering, but the third "they're not" sold me. I'm onboard!

Very first mead I made used raisins as nutrients and it tasted like gasoline, a year and a half later still like gasoline but now with the slight flavour of propane! Oh how I was lied to in the beginning 😂😂

How about telling us what is a good nutrient?

LOL. I'm new to mead making. I totally believe they are poor nutrients. I've made 2 traditionals. The first was a raisin based and the second followed TOSNA. I must say that while the second fermented quickly and evenly, it was definitely missing something taste wise and the raisin based mead was awesome. It made me think I might want raisins as a flavoring regardless.

Short answer: yes, they are a nutrient, albeit a very poor one. About all it contributes are some tannins and added sugar. They can, however, add body to a mead and potentially be a source of wild yeast.

If you don't want to bother with using Fermaid or DAP and other commercial products, there are other easy DIY options such as boiled el cheapo baker's yeast (the kind you can get a 3-pack of at the grocery store for 99¢) or even a cup of Grape Nuts cereal steeped in boiling water and strained to make a wort. Either of those will work a thousand times better as a yeast nutrients than raisins.

UHM excuse me, I'll have you know I watched a video by literally any popular YouTuber who acts like they discovered mead and HE SAID that yeast is a nutrient so OBVIOUSLY that's correct.

Heck! Even those who make grape wine add nutrients and they are fermenting only grapes (ie non oxidized raisins that have not been dehydrated). So if grape wine makers use nutrients and they ferment hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds of grapes (it takes about 16 lbs of grapes to make a gallon of wine) then a handful of shriveled grapes are going to do diddly squat (if that) when you are making a wine from nutrition and nitrogen poor honey.

Solid video. lol. I really like all the fact-checking and common sense. Thumbs up from me! I used raisins in my first meads just because. In my head, always knew they weren't as good as actual Yeast nutrient, more of a stand-in for first-timers and cheap-o's. Looking at the research it definitely sucks as a source of nitrogen, but wasn't that it's niche to begin with?
