This is the only reality TV on discovery, that doesn’t disappoint.

God bless you, Jeremy Wade.

3:53 i didn't think the goonch he pulled in was that big until the fish stuck it's head out of the water! Catfish are some amazing creatures.

The best thing about this show is that they never have to have a click bait thumbnail 😂

This is my absolute favourite episode. When he jumped into the river, his crew members must have aged ten years! Amazing episode, this.

Jeremy: has a man-sized fish on the end of his line
Also Jeremy: "I'm going to have to go for a swim"

I love how even though Jeremy Wade has seen some monster-sized fish in his career, he still finds pure joy in reeling in a fish no matter the size.

Possibly the scariest catfish, never thought I'd see one with shark teeth.

Seen every episode, others are scary. But this one here I have truly had nightmares about after watching.

Go catch a 20 lb catfish and you will have an appreciation for their strength, power, speed.

I’ve learned more from Jeremy wade than I ever have any science/biology teacher because he has so much love for what he does. I mean... he’s in his 60’s. Can you imagine how hard this is on a man his age? Kudos to this man for his drive and interest in what he does.

Probably his lucky t-shirt. When he is trying to catch an elusive man eater.

What I appreciate is his respect for the cultures, and the creatures.

We have live goonch catfish on display. Oh, I'm an full-time aquarist, btw! Want to know what makes this catfish so ghastly? Read on... 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟

The goonch catfish is pretty much sedentary. It hardly moves but when food is present & within reach? A goonch can burst forward with surprising speed! And "pounce" on it's prey much like a tiger would; swallowing everything *whole* & suddenly? In an instant, all is calm again.

The good news here is a goonch catfish doesn't feed everyday. The bad news is, however there's always another hungry goonch, everyday! And their hunting method is eerie.

Their primary prey are members of the carp family known as the 'mahseer' e.g. the golden mahseer & hump-backed mahseer. And they are huge! With a hump-back mahseer capable of growing almost as big as an adult man! Powerful swimmers too. So, how does the goonch keep up with it's prey?

THEY STALK THE MAHSEER.

Yes, these catfish will swim up & down the stretch of the river where mahseers school in high densities. Where they'll hide downstream, just where their prey abound. And wait for nightfall.

Once dusk has come to pass? The mahseers are vulnerable - members of the carp family are diurnal. So, they "sleep" at night. Practically blind in the dark, they rely solely on their lateral-line to sense for & navigate the rocky terrain amidst raging currents. Here is when the goonch go for the kill.

Sedentary, they need not move in closer to snatch their blind prey. In fact, it is the prey which will wander close to their own doom! Mistakening a lurking goonch for the rocky outcrop. Once within range, the goonch wastes no time! The riverbed comes to life & claim it's victim for the night. It strikes, lightning-fast & then all is calm, once more.

The goonch catfish, Bagarius yarrelli. Silent. Brooding. And deadly...
