The residue inside that coffee mug is impressive. I bet you could just add boiling water and steep the cup. ☕

"Spin-Flip Raman Laser" was also the name of the Professor's band in the 1960s!

I didn't know this Rock 'n Roll revue "New Scientist". The band on the cover looks über cool. Gonna get me their vinyl of "Roll over Mendelëiv".

Fascinating! Thank-you.
Unfortunately, the cell which the Professor had used was completely hidden by the ad for another video, which was spread across most of the middle of the screen.

I got very excited when my daughter graduated from Nottingham Uni, and Behold !, the professor appeared on stage 👌🏻

We use Indium inserts for our ramp probes, which are inserted into a port in order to tap into a large magnet coil bathed in liquid helium, which typically gets ramped 1.5 tesla in field strength, or 750 amps of current. the magnets are super conductive, and are used with MRI scanners. we change the inserts after every 2 or three uses. also the cold head portion of the magnet, which is used to re-condense helium gas into liquid, stored in the magnet, also use malleable indium jackets that rest between the contact points between magnet and coldhead.

its important to have a low resistance material like indium to ensure the current does not get too high while ramping, or a rapid boil off and quench of 2000 liters of liquid helium could occur. on a warm summers day, the plume could be seen for miles if that were to happen.

Very interesting video . I used to work in a semiconductor research company that made Indium Antimonide, Indium Phosphide, and Indium Arsenide as well as Gallium and Cadmium compounds for semiconductors very interesting to see
these being made. I used to test these materials at Liquid Nitrogen temp. But that was many years ago its interesting to see the progression of Semiconductor materials.
