I agree with you on pretty much all of that and I try my best to get more work landscaping then lawns.
With the weather always ending up killing everything every year it's a hard to predict route. But in the growing season it's easy to get 400-500 a quick day cutting lawns at least. I get lucky, my radius is 2 miles from my doorstep and I'm loaded with customers.
I price as you do with mulching so I've been selling a few yards a week for now while cutting and spring cleanups and it's 100% better money.

I started my business with landscaping and loved it. It did suck starting out when I didn't have enough work coming in. But after 3 years of mixing mowing and landscaping I'm dumping most of my mowing and going back to full time landscaping.

Keith, thanks for another video gem. I’m learning the hard way (as is my style it seems) the pitfalls of make tall grass short! If you don’t get the pricing, service route, and property selection dialed in, you’ll find yourself running ragged, making modest profit, and having little time to work on bigger and better things. Pound-for-pound, it’s the landscaping projects that deliver the best returns. The School of Hard Knocks hands out some important lessons …

Great video. Here in the UK I run a busy lawn care business and it really does take the time away from other, often more profitable jobs that I put off to not mess with the lawn schedule. After 30 years chasing lawns I'm now taking on the bigger clearing jobs that others don't want but i can do👍 cheers

I left tree care full time to mow because of the stress in cuting trees hanging over houses and geting 5 guys to show up . I make 2500 a week mowing 9 months a yr then come clean ups . I work 7 days a week family is happy im tried but man 15 k a month or better is nice once i add in trims and beds per week its hard sometimes but we get her done buddy .

I'm starting up a lawncare/landscaping business. At first, I was planning on just mowing and trimming. Now I've been rethinking it and would like to lean more into landscaping. What concerns me is 1) knowing that I will have to make mistakes with pricing and estimates to learn 2) There are a lot of things I don't understand how to do

Two weeks ago, I agreed to update the landscape of a home located in the wealthiest County in Georgia. The plants shrubs ect were over grown, old ect. Homeowners gave me free reign to do what's needed.. what my vision is. This is my first solo gig. I just happened upon this video as I am seeking information on how to price jobs, LEARN, and gather more ideas for installs and such. Nervous to take on a task that I never would have thought I'd be doing 😊😅. THANK YOU isn't enough for your insight, knowledge, and ability to educate and communicate extremely well, providing me with the tools I need to succeed. Thank you, thank you

I’m ready to be done with mowing but I’m certainly a little nervous about getting rid of the consistent income. I’m passing on projects to do my weekly lawns and it’s getting old. I definitely see the sweet spot of having a full time mowing crew and a full time landscape crew. Love your videos man.

Agree with what Keith says, but you have to start somewhere to get your name out there. After that, I completely agree with him. Crawl before you walk. The relationships grow with the quality of work you do. So cut grass better than anyone in your market to start. It works.

Keith, you and I have been through many similar things. After being mentored and going through the steps of getting licensed in pesticides (it's a 2 year apprenticeship here in Michigan), I phased out of mowing. We cut the crews over the years, gave accounts to different friends who worked in the different areas, and I kept a few select customers of 20 years or so that were right close to my shop because I did enjoy mowing. This handful was a day's worth for me solo and it was KILLING me. I came to the realization that I was making no money carrying a string trimmer when I had people waiting to have their lawns treated. I made the move, and gave this away, as well. Now granted, I kept them all as lawn care (fert/weed) customers. But even now, I'm in a sense transitioning as we are no longer marketing for fert customers. When the calls come in (from referrals, etc.) we take them, but I am no longer actively pursuing them. What is happening, is the same thing is happening with fert and weed as what happened with mowing. The market prices are bringing the margin down, as there are too many guys out there racing to the bottom. And I'm not just talking about big green...I mean even smaller private guys are targeting more toward price point and budget, while giving the people next to nothing but treating a few weeds. But most people are bamboozled by that. I am now focusing more on the bed, tree, and ornamental care (treatments), as well as mosquito and perimeter pest control. Gotta roll with the changes to stay active.

Thanks for the insight. I have learned how important route density is in my lawn care business, and up-selling additional services like topiary/ornamental shrub trimming, flower beds, mulch and gutter cleaning. I'm about to add weed control and fertilization and will slowly transition to just that. So much money in just running around and spraying and you only have to see each customer like 6-7 times per year. The scheduling isn't as difficult and there's less equipment to maintain. Make as much as I can at each house before leaving and then my margins increase drastically. At least as a solo operator with my wife as a helper. :)

I think it depends on the area your in. But yes you are blessed. Great videos keep them coming.

that’s great man, i just sure hope you practice and teach your crew the proper ways of pruning ornamental trees and shrubs instead of just being a hack for a quick buck. But I’m sure your passionate enough to instill that for them though, as this is your career.
