I usually start in the spring at about 2.5 in, & gradually grow to 4 1/4 by July(my Toro's highest setting). I have it high during the summer months, so that the lawn can survive a long hot rain-less period. I don't have sprinkler system and only water the lawn as a last resort. End of Sept., I start going back down to 2.5".

Here in Texas with frequent drought or high temperatures, I let my grasses grow longer than my neighbors. My lawn always seem greener and healthier for that reason. I think short grass in Texas can be detrimental to lawn unless you water frequently due to blazing sunlight, although my lawn has two trees giving shades. I opt for around 3 inches.

It actually depends on your grass type, I'm in Arizona and have Bermuda grass that is very drought tolerant and loves to be cut short. I cut mine between 0.5 and 1 inch depending on how I want it to look. If you have Bermuda grass in the warm season area then get a reel mower and cut it at 1.5 inches or less.

i've done testing on this subject. it doesn't matter if you mow at 2.5" or 4" if it's hot and dry the grass is gonna suffer regardless. there is no benefit to that extra 1.5" of length. it may buy you an extra day or two but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter. i usually mow at 2.5" on st augustine and then if it is hot and it gets dry i just don't mow until it rains again so the grass will be 4-5" anyways during that time. it will still turn brown if we go a month with no rain even if it was 6" tall. the key is water not so much the height of cut. just stay over the 2" mark like you said in the video. i guess type of grass plays a role too but as far as warm season grasses i've found this to be true. cool season is prob best to mow tall like 3-4". i would suggest 2-3" for warm season. you can go lower if you use a reel mower on bermuda of course. if you are at temps over 95F then i simply would just not mow at all. the grass isn't gonna be growing much if at all when temps are that high anyways. at least wait until it rains before you mow when it's that hot. never mow when it's that hot and dry. it's simply not needed.

I live in Phx. and have tiff lawns and cut with a reel mower. I don't have to cut it everyday. It grows faster in the summer so it's cut every 4 days but all other time it's once a week. The reel I use is the first lawn mower I bought! It's one of those manual push mowers and it cost me $58 bucks brand new! Also with tiff every year you have to cut it as low as you can and then you slowly raise the height every so often with the goal of having it 1½" by the time the weather cools down and it basically stops growing.

If you are fortunate enough to have an irrigation system, then cut short. If you don’t cut long. The route system is 1-1/2 longer than the plant length. Thus longer routes will be more drought resistant shorter routes. And yes, the longer the plant allows for less weeds.
That’s proven. Good luck & enjoy the mow!

I do 3 1/2 to 4 in the hot days of summer in Iowa. I start cutting back to 2 by late fall.

Great video! I cut a various heights throughout the season. Tall in the summer months and shorter in the fall/spring months. All in an effort to conserve water and drive roots deeper. Ultimate goal will be to get below a half inch with a greens mower.

I cut my rye grass at 2 1/4" in Portland, Oregon, which was planted last Fall. I try to follow the 1/3 cut rule, which means I have to mow it every 2nd day. It seems that this 1/3rd rule dictates a more frequent cut the shorter you keep it. I use a standard mower (not reel) to cut it. It's still a little bumpy from the lawn installation and I will put sand down to smooth it once the heat of the summer subsides.

It all depends on the type of grass you have . Fescue cut tall. Bermuda cut tighter. Centipede about in the middle of those 2 grasses.

The uncut lawns are not (imho) a 'mess', but a delight. Biodiverse, welcoming pollinators, and rich. My solution, some areas are not mowed at all, other mowed as high as I can (sandy soil, closecut will lose moisture)

I like a nice low cut "putting green" vs. the rough. I don't care if it's a thicker darker green to mow higher. Plus I don't want to mow every 2 days to keep it at 4in or whatever.

One thing to remember if you cut High and have a long grass blade and that only means one thing you're going to have a good healthy root system a good healthy root system means Greener lawns
