Recently I have started using Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane. I have realized that there are not that many videos showing how to apply it. So, in this video I will show you how I apply water based polyurethane. Let me know, in the comments, if you have any questions.

Very helpful, thanks Ray! Please keep making videos, and don't listen to the negative Nancy's. You helped me and I appreciate you taking your time to make the video and edit it.

Pour your poly into a second container so you don’t contaminate the whole can.

This is the first video I have seen where someone applies a water based polyurethane over light colored raw unpainted and unstained lumber thus answering the question I have been looking all over the internet for - does it change the color of the wood to look yellow or wet DURING appllication - it doesn't look like it. There is alot of talk about yellowing later in time but I couldnt find a single visual example of what "clear" waterbased polyurethane actually looks like during application on a bare piece of light colored lumber - so thanks for making this video.

Thank you for this. I am not really a crafty person but I recently bought an unfinished cabinet that I stained with Varathane. One small suggestion (I know, everybody's a director, ) but when you applied the first coat, it would have been helpful to me (a beginner) to see how you were applying in real time and not sped up. Also you didn't mention the kind of brush you were using which would be useful info for me to have. The info about sanding between coats and the amount of time between was very useful. Thanks.

🙌 Thanks for the tip of not shaking it... I was not aware of that and I more than likely would have shaken it thinking it's like a paint. I plan on using a wipe on polyurethane on my guitar body and air bubbles would drive me crazy.

Thanks! I was looking for a video on this product (mine is satin however). I'm building a desk and so I bought and stained a worktop with two layers of quick drying wood stain, let it sit for 24 hours and will now go ahead and apply the first of 3 layers, following your simple instructions. In particular it was helpful to learn how long we should let the poly sit before sanding and applying the following layer. Great job and keep it up.

I've never seen a more deadpan delivery, it's like you don't even want to be doing this lol

Do you always sand between coats? The can says to sand if you wait longer than 24 hours between coats. Do you find that you get better results sanding between every coat regardless?

Thanks for the vid. I wasn't sure about sanding, thanks. They suggest 4 coats minimum. However it does go on easy and I haven't had a problem with bubbles like some others have mentioned.

Thank you for this great video Ray!! I applied it with a brush in my house and the water based poly had very low fumes. I've only applied one coat over stained cherry, using a nice new brush (a few bristles still ended up in the finish-hope the residual sands out -keeping tweasers ready for next coat. ), the brush strokes are very pronounced and the sheen is inconsistent after first coat. Am hoping that a very light sand (don't want to mess up the stain) and a couple more coats will level out the texture and ultimately smooth out. Very nervous about things at the moment though. A lot of work up to this point and not thrilled with the current look.

Thank you for publishing your video. It was very helpful. I also could not find much about Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane. If useful to you and your viewers, I used some today on an unfinished birch countertop. I first used Varathane Wood Conditioner, followed by Varathane Gel Stain (a dark color). I then applied four coats of the Varathane poly. It was easy to apply, and odor was much lower than I had anticipated. All in all, I am happy with all the products and found them easy to work with. Again, thank you for your primer on applying this specific poly. Much appreciated.

Thank you! I have been searching for you, a video of just a can of deft clear! I didn't have all the stuff other videos were mixing with. Didn't have a spray gun, didn't want to use a spray cam. This was perfect. And the helpful comments were great. Excellent video to fill a hole

Thank you for this video I’ve been looking for information on this product for a couple of days and yours is the first video I found actually covering it! A little suggestion for future videos would be to have the music fade almost completely out while you’re talking then fade back in when you’re working, I know that’s almost what you did but I personally feel like the volume change is sudden (kinda jarring because I had headphones) and sometimes the music makes it hard to hear you speak. The speaking volume can be fixed with a cheap $15 lapel mic connected to a old phone you use to record the audio just kept in your pocket. Hopefully this doesn’t seem like I’m being harsh on your videos I genuinely just wanted to give my opinion and am personally subscribing and liking! Can’t wait to see more from you!

Hi how many coats for a thick restaurant table look? Like 7 or more? Not like a thick glass plate, but like a coat of water, a little less. Mine is golden oak stain so mid browns. and some yellows pop.

Thanks Ray. I recently had a reducer installed in my home for a new room as well as a piece of saddle wood extension thing, both are raw and I am going to tackle doing three coats of water poly on them myself this weekend or so.
