During World War II, talented leader Sgt. Kelly (Thomas Mitchell) takes under his wing a reserved and somewhat insecure junior officer, Cpl. Colin Spence (Henry Fonda), while leading a regiment of soldiers through the Libyan desert. A reluctant pupil, Spence is preoccupied with daydreams of his home-front girlfriend, Valentine Lee (Maureen O'Hara). But when a plane crash seriously wounds Kelly and cripples their means of navigation, Spence is forced to take command of his fellow soldiers.
Initial release: January 11, 1943

Thomas Mitchell was just as good a character actor as a ghost as he was a human. a true trooper not sitting still to be upstaged by anyone.

Wow- what a guy has to do to hook up with Maureen is murder-lol. You just have to hope some poor guy didn't see this movie and try to play hero to impress his girl. This is really a good WWII movie, though, and the life in that hot sand was hard enough without worrying about the enemy. I'm glad they made such films to show what they went through without all the attention that was given to the European Theater.

Very good upload. Henry Fonda was very handsome as a young man, not that he looked bad later. He was just as handsome as some of the heart throbs!

I came here for Maureen O’Hara and left satisfied. Apparently Henry Fonda hated this film; he was forced into making it by Darryl Zanuck. It was turned down by Tyrone Power and another actor. Afterwards, Fonda enlisted. Thanks for making it available to us all!

Thanks for posting a first-rate print of this classic WWII action-propaganda melodrama. Before there was Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Tiktok, movies were the primary means of influencing public opinion in an entertaining fashion. This is a great example.

Too little war in this movie but that’s how the old movies are.

An early B & W low budget no frills war drama with all the necessary elements that make for great believable entertainment.
Fonda was an is that unmistakable star quality.

It’s disappointing when you see the Soldiers walking through the desert and you see multiple shadows from lighting instead of one shadow from the sun.

Why would you ever hike in the desert during the day? That is completely illogical.

When they found it was the best fighting moral booster in WW1, mail went insane, more letters shipped than bullets, more boxes than bombs, everything and anything delivered, in huge amounts. WW2 delivered even more 😅👌
