It would be convenient if the mesh was built into the rubber bud instead, that way we could just replace it along with the rubber buds need be.

Great idea! Much better than the thinking of the original makers! They should have thought along these line in the first place instead of their convuluted wax sensor inside next to their virtually uncleanable mesh and filter...Just get rid of them all and have replacable filters between the rubber thingy and the speaker.
A. It's easy to clean and relplace
B. The wax is kept even further away from whatever they think needs protection inside....and
C. You don't need a stupid wax sensor that decides, "Whooa Wax alert! Let's ruin this guys listening experience forever while he figures out that the only way to get rid of the wax is to break his device!"
Good ole Russian common sense saves the day again!
