Why on earth do people annotate fiction books?

You may have seen people on Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok drawing, writing, and even crafting in their fiction books and thought - WHAT?

So why would someone ‘ruin’ a fiction book like that? What’s the point?

That's not sacrilegious, it's interacting with your book. For some of us it's necessary.

I'm a literature student so I actually take notes sometimes on the technical elements of a book or try to point out themes and motives and the like. I don't do this with every book, but once you've learned to read like that, you can't turn it off haha.

I love the idea of marking certain quotes/phrases, and passing the book on to friends and family

I grew up dyslexic before this was a thing hence lots of unexplainable troubles and low self esteem. But I was secretly determined to read. I made myself read. My books ended up looking well read because of the time it took and the nerves I went though. After a while I realised I LOVE to the EVIDENCE of ‘i read this book’
I fell in love with reading and even took a job working at the library for nine years.
All book that are on my private shelf are full of underlining and marker pen. Getting physical and Interacting with the book helps me to stay focused and learn and understand it better.
I was here, I Read Books, I was deep inside this book and if you ask me I can geek out and tell you all about it.

I am thrilled about this trend, it’s cute, it’s personal and it’s great for mental health.

I think annotating makes the book "mine", too personal. Have these few books that are filled with annotations and with my added comments, and I lended those only to very close people

Wow this brings me back. When the Deathly Hallows was about to be released I marked my HalfBlood prince book with tabs at every reference to the horcruxes. In an attempt to solve it before harry. I completely failed lol

I don’t judge others for doing it but I couldn’t do that to my precious books. 📚 to me that’s a sin. lol but that’s just me. I think I wouldn’t mind the sticky notes but never ever write on the book. That would give me nightmares lol 😂

I use temporary tabs with a very low stickiness to mark pages with maps.
Extremely useful for historical novels and the odd fantasy novel with more than one map.
The tabs can be used on the next book, but the adhesive does become compromised after a few books.

I really think ppl do it either bc they create content around books or bc they watch videos where ppl do it. Ppl have annotated books forever, but having a list of 10 reactions to tab and 200 tabs for a 400 page fiction book screams trendy.

I should try this. I always just make mental notes and it always fails so this should work for what I want, I just never thought to do it.

I would be totally into it! Just doesn’t work with library books. Next time I buy a book I want to try it

I really like the idea of interacting with your book. That would make the whole reading experience even more immersive I think. I'll try doing next time! By the way where can I get those tabs? T
Thanks for th vid 🙌

I love reading but that would be a waste of time for me.

I've just started and I love it. At first I thought the same but, they're my books and I feel like it's just so more personable. A way of expressing yourself through the books you love!

Started doing it after my high school literature teacher required it. It’s alertness and interacting with the book.

I also like old books and it’s so cool when old books have annotations, it’s like a real glimpse of past people’s inner thoughts. Maybe books of mine will survive and end up in who knows hands, and they will have a glimpse of my thoughts. I think that’s cool.

I don’t currently have a whole collection of tabs and I’m not confident in highlighters, so I mostly use pencil or pens, sometimes color coding. But it’s fun.

Because it helps me become a more critical reader, because I want to note moments that impacted me, because I have questions I can't ask the characters or author so I note it down, because I love the book.

Don't forget about english learners (like me ☺️) who use annotations to learn and remember new words from our favorite fiction books

Personally I can't fathom permanently doing something to a book so I just use pull tabs. I don't use pens or highlighters just tabs. I found a pack on Amazon with long 'sticky strips' that I use as makeshift highlighters.

I bought the book and I'll do whatever I want with it. If it's from a friend or from the library I would treat it more carefully
