The olderst beer I drank expired in 1998. It was an Augustina Maibock and tasted pretty normal. 25 years in the basement didn't hurt it.

I was once hitchhiking through Arizona and found a half full 24 pack of Heineken under an over pass, the box was sun/weather bleached, could barely make out the letters. One of the most memorable and appreciated drink sesh's of my life.

15% or higher dogfish head beers (with the yellow caution cap) in my garage fridge from 2011-2019 are still good. They've actually gotten better.

I've found the taste issue depends on beer to beer. Sometimes I've come back to stuff a year later, and found it just as I remember or just fine. This ranges from black lagers, IPAs, lagers, wheats, even some ciders, etc, and then barrel aged stuff outright encourages you to keep one for shelf aging. I think the most consistent one I've found does go bad are abbey style and tripels. But there's been regular IPAs and lagers too that just don't work after a time.

I accidently bought some 8 yr old Anchor Steam one time. I was gonna return it, but my buddy was curious to try it. It looked a little funky, but it wasn't too bad, after all.

there are more and more brasseries which brew craft beers that are made to be preserved in a cellar, much like wine, I have a few dozen of 'em i kept for 6-7 years (mostly imperial stouts and barley wines)and the flavor profile keeps improving!

There’s a lot of variables with the last few beers that changes depending on the brew, a sour beer with fruit in it can last for years and only get better, hoppy beers will turn malty over time. Honestly it’s all about how you store them.
