We built our tandem-axle toy-hauler on a commercial chassis.
We think tandem-axle adds resilience.

Looking at the RSVP? rig, we notice something [thumb UP]...
We built both our ExpeditionVehicle body and toy-hauler body to extend slightly past the tires, eliminating the need for fenders.

Find a Eurovan with a manual transmission and build it out yourself. That's what our son did three years ago and it has been on many extended road trips. Yes, there are maintenance costs as with everything mechanical. It fits in any parking space.
