Climate Change Making Housing Crisis Worse

"1171 Shoreham looks much like it did when Anna Zimmerman lived there: modest but presentable. A good starter home for Zimmerman and her husband when they bought it in 2005, for a while it provided an idyllic existence in suburban Charleston, S.C., a community of friendly neighbors for their young child, a quaint backyard and even space for Zimmerman’s mother-in-law. Then, in 2015, the first flood hit, taking most of their property with it after a heavy rain. This came as a shock; no flood risk had been disclosed when Zimmerman bought the house. But, determined to turn lemons into lemonade, she used the insurance money to fix it up just as she liked. “I would have been happy living in this house into retirement,” she says now, looking up at it from across the street."

From here forward, when we buy homes, we are all going to have to not only hire an appraiser, but also a geologist to make sure the home and its location are safe going forward

I don't live in the US, but I used to own a house near an estuary in my country. When I sold it, I was tempted to list it as a future beachfront property due to sea level rise.

I live in a very weather safe area... No wild fires no floods no snow no tornados no hurricanes no volcanos... Just really hot summers and we got AC... But it's a allergy hell hole..

Let all the foreign investors buy them up.

It should be illegal for the realtors to knowingly withhold negative information regarding a home or the land it’s on from potential buyers.

Lack of disclosure is one of the most obvious holes to fill. Even a devout libertarian can see the necessity of this type of legislation. There is no place for economic dishonesty anywhere.

Syria had a civil war mainly because of a ten-year-long drought caused by climate change. It all started with peaceful demonstrations to get help during the drought.

How climate change politics has effected housing is more like it. How has Covid affected.

I remember after superstorm Sandy people were complaining when the towns put up sand dunes to protect their properties. All they cared about was the dunes obscured their view of the ocean.

Let's sell the flood houses to the investment banks then cancel flood insurance :)

Wait a second there, I think you're being a little unfair to Elon Musk on more than one count.... Tesla single handedly started the electric vehicle revolution which is overwhelmingly positive for the climate... and the car that you mentioned that crashed recently was not being driven autonomously at the time... Sure, people died... and the car caught fire, but lets not forget that Tesla have the highest safety rating in the industry, and other brands of car crash and catch fire every day, and people die because of that too.
Also, the Mars thing is nothing to do with billionaires.... it has everything to do with the fact that Elon understands that eventually there will be a natural disaster on Earth which will destroy civilisation.... be that a more deadly global pandemic, an asteroid such as the one that killed the dinosaurs or something we haven't even thought of yet! This might happen in 10, 000 years, or 1000 years... or 100 years, you just don't know and this leads to the conclusion that if humanity, and potentially life as we know it is to survive in the long term, we must expand beyond the earth. Living on Mars initially will be hard, it will depend on support from Earth, there will be no luxuries and there will be endless hard work.... this is not a resort for billionaires...
Finally, yes, the economic situation with tax and other things is such that certain very lucky people... and those inheriting money can become very rich, and this is generally bad, but most of those billionaires hold on to that cash, hoard it and play the stock market to increase their wealth... Elon is collecting wealth through various legitimate businesses which overwhelmingly benefit the planet, and immediately spending it, mostly on wages for an enormous workforce to realise his vision of a colony on Mars... he is a 1 man economic stimulus!... He is not hoarding money in the way other billionaires are, he is taking money on one end, and paying it back, to mostly blue collar workers in various factories, and in Brownsville... which must have seen a massive boom in tourism as people come to see the rockets.... I don't understand why Elon gets so much hate, yes he is a billionaire.. but he is using that money in ways that are overwhelmingly beneficial not only to the economy but also to humanity itself.

So, by law they have to disclose any deaths, moved graveyards or tragedies that took place in a home but not environmental threats? 🙉

I know I live in a 100 year flood plain but not many outsiders would know, we have well rounded word of mouth communities and most locals know. A well maintained dam and thoughtful river management helps, an old well house buried in my backyard with clay pipes, does not. thoughtful

Talk to the people who've been there forever, most are happy to dish the dirt about a neighborhood.
