they eat mostly head and skin because those are the most nutrtious parts, if they fill themselves with plain meat its less calories for them when they go hibernate.

This isn't an entire waste other animals feed on those remains like wolves, coyotes, foxes, eagles, & Bob cats & the decaying meat gives good nutrients 2 the trees & other plant life
