This is the first track from Deep Purple's third and eponymous album, Deep Purple (1969).

Lineup (Mk I): Ritchie Blackmore: guitar, Rod Evans: lead vocals, Nick Simper: bass guitar and backing vocals, Jon Lord: Hammond organ, keyboards, and backing vocals, Ian Paice: drums

Lyrics:
Chasing shadows, over my walls
with myself hardly sleeping
Dwarfs and giants, twenty feet tall
fill the room with their creeping

Sounds of breathing sharpen my ears
then they fade into nothing
Someone's laughter out in the street
fills the night with their loving

I feel the ice in my head
Running its hands through my bed
Not even dreaming I seem to be dead
Colours of yellow and colours of red

All I'm asking some secret voice
is to lead me to darkness

I'm so tired, dawn never comes
I just hide in the shadows

The whole album is an absolute masterpiece!

Everybody mentions Lazy and The Mule, but I believe the drumwork in Chasing Shadows carries it just as much as those songs. The percussion and bass create the atmosphere, and the reverberating vocals and guitar solo take it into orbit. This song is tremendously underrated, it's outta sight.

If you like Rod Evans. After leaving Deep Purple He was the lead singer of a Super Group called "Captain Beyond" the first album by them is unbelievable! Progressive space rock. The group consisted of members of later "Iron Butterfly" a guitarist called Rhino, singer Rod Evans, the drummer from Johnny Winter band, Bobby Caldwell and on bass Lee Dorman I believe from Iron Butterfly. I promise this album will blow you away! Way ahead of it's time. Just full of great guitar riffs and the drumming is fantastic. Rod Evans really shines on Captain Beyond.

One of my favorite albums. My mother bought me "Shades of Deep Purple" for my 16th birthday in 69. She saw them on some show like Dick Clark or something like that. Deep Purple played "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman" she thought they looked like a nice group that maybe I would like. Thanks Mom!! I still like the first 3 album the best. Ritchie was in outer space or some mystical plane playing on MK1. I think that was the first time I heard sweep picking. I really like this album, songs like "Why didn't Rosemary" Come on! that bluesy, not a twelve but like a 15 bar blues solo is visceral and mean, it still blows me away. Don't get me wrong, I love MK11, and Rainbow, especially the solo in "Still I'm Sad" I could go on and on, Blackmore is definitely my favorite guitarist to listen to. Great song choice Timaeus 1

One of my favorite tunes from Deep Purple. Sitting in a dark room with this tune blasting on my headphones.

This is one of those songs that would unexpectedly blow you away if you saw it performed by a good cover band in a bar.

Amazing! Deep Purple Mark I is in no way less great than any other version of DP. One of the greatest bands in the history of music!

Terribly underrated, the band and the album, you can hear the captain beyond to come in Rod's singing. The real prototype for widespread panic even more then the brothers. Ritchie reigned suprreme around this time. Can you believe he canned Nick after this! Awesome thank you!

This song and Blind are two of the greats from this album and among the best song arrangements ever created by Deep Purple.

Wow just wow. I first heard this track around 1973, i was listening to 'The Deep Purple Story' on radio Luxembourg and this came on . i just sat there in stunned silence, 47 years later it still has that effect.

Early Purple, mach II, and the Coverdale years, all genius. And through it all Ian Paice has been their drummer, Ian has set many standards and has influenced many drummers, listen to this track with headphones on amazing.

The bass playing is superb. My favourite song from the original Deep Purple on their last album. Simper and Evans had been replaced by the time this album was released

Rediscovering this album as a favorite, over 50 years later. Nice when that happens.
