The Zoom R24 - How to Record a One-Man Band - Ep.1: Intro to Recording Drums

A comprehensive description of my work flow in the Zoom R24, when recording as a one-man band.
The Zoom is a great way to learn more about recording, mixing and mastering. In this series, I mic and record a set of Slingerland Magnum drums using the Glyn Johns mic method, which is a four mic set-up. In addition to the Zoom R24, I employ a Rane MSB-1 Pre amp. The mics utilized include Cascade Fathead Ribbon Mics, an AKG P220 Condenser Mic, and a CAD KBM412 bass drum mic. Remo Ambassador on most batter heads, except the snare drum and Emperor reso heads all around. The bass drum head is a Controlled Sound Black Dot.

Of course, we now know, that the Zoom R24 does have a 24 bit selection. (At least my unit does). Learned this as I went along myself. Although, I am not sure if there really were any changes to the Zoom since it first came out (and if it was originally just 16 bit) which I think was around 2010 maybe? (And applying any firmware updates as described in the manual seems REALLY tedious and complicated, but that's another matter). But back to the 16 bit vs 24 bit thing you mentioned, it may be important to note, that Online Music Distributors (at least CD Baby for example) will not even accept the file if it is recorded in 24 bit! So yea, I agree, I don't think there is much of a difference myself. I only just purchased the unit about a year ago myself, and am still learning things about it, and how it works, and its pros and cons. (Haven't tried it with the Cubase software that comes with it yet, but anxious to try that out, yet somewhat nervous about it at the same time). Before I bought the Zoom, I mostly used the Boss BR 864 and the Tascam 2488 MK II, so I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos Chad, and taking viewers with you through your journey. Just my two cents here (if you want to comment on some of the things I mentioned) as I am an Indie Artist as well, currently doing everything myself. (And like a sponge when it comes to this stuff). Thanks...

Great series! I have the Zoom R16, and this method will also work using that machine.

Thanks for doing this. I'm revamping my home studio and looking to do exactly this and curious about this unit. I've never tried to record drums anywhere near properly.

Cool video, I like your approach to this, I can totally relate. I hate being tethered to a computer. I worked my way up from analog to Boss BR1180's for a long while but eventually the hard drives give out or become corrupt. I really need to try one of these Zoom units.

Wow, your journey sounds a lot like my journey so far! We've had the same recording evolution! I just purchase a used one of these R24 units. I want to make quick demos with it, without having to fire up the 'big' system in my home studio. I just got it going tonight. So much in a little box! I am new to this digital recording though. So how do I download a completed song on this R24? Do have to
remove the SD? Do you use the USB out to a memory stick? I'm envisioning having an mp3 file that I can play in the car? I''m a bit of a digital novice I guess. I will see if you have posted other segments. Maybe you cover this. thanks!

Good discussion. The r24 is a learning curve. I hate the little display. I had one for four years. I like it. For a guitarist, I recommend learning the rhythm / drum sequencer first so that your recordings are workable. Set the BPM, find a simple drum track and use the metronome first.
Also you can set the BIT rate to 24 - Under Project - Rec.

Hey chad, i have a question. How to increase the volume levels when you end mastering on zoom r24 and create a file on PC? The file on PC sounds so low.. :/
Thanks!

just one question; is it normal that the jack guitar wire doesnt go inside entirely in the inputs of the r24?
