As a chemist, some of what's being said in this video leaves me scratching my head. Detergents don't prevent oxidation. They modify surface energies (helping the oil "wet" engine surfaces) and help suspend contaminants. Antioxidants prevent oxidation. Antioxidants are often phenolic compounds which are usually weakly alkaline. This can also help buffer pH as the oil breaks down so that it takes a larger fraction of the oil to degrade before it becomes acidic. The good friction properties are from a lubricity agent called Zinc Dithiophosphate (ZDDP for short). ZDDP is one of the best lubricity additives known. It has a downside, though, in that its combustion products include zinc and sulfur which can passivate the precious metal screens in catalytic converters, reducing their useful service life. For this reason, US oil specs set a ceiling meant to allow catalytic converters to last 100, 000-200, 000 miles. Euro specs allow for a higher amount of ZDDP which is why many European car manufacturers allow 10, 12, or sometimes even 15 thousand mile oil change intervals. Oils with this higher level of ZDDP can be bought in the US but will usually be called "racing" oil and will not carry the SAE or DOT certifications necessary to preserve your engine's warranty (regardless, they usually perform better and longer than the appropriately certified oils). The three premium brands - Amsoil, Lucas, and Royal Purple - all have pretty close to the ceiling amount of ZDDP in their street formulations and all provide excellent lubricating properties under normal driving conditions. Amsoil's test results are marginally better and Royal Purple's extreme low temperature performance is a bit worse (don't use it where freezing weather occurs unless you have a block heater) but the three really are very close together otherwise, and all three are head and shoulders better than all the other brands.

Not a fan of the repetitive sales pitch.. but what he describes at 4:56 is the same experience I had... There was a MASSIVE difference on the first start up, my engine instantly had oil pressure and was much smoother and silent, I could hardly hear the valve train at all.

I use Pennzoil Ultra, and change it at the car manufacturer recommended service interval. My Camaro oil analysis shows the engine to be in excellent condition and the oil could go longer than the 5k miles I used. 6 quarts cost me $30 so I'm happy.

Good info on this vid. Been running royal purple 22 years. Never had an issue. I teally did like the 100% synthetic and the oil consumption.

You should do a video using Blackstone laboratory to test after a certain mileage. That would be a non-bias test.

What sold me on Amsoil - I purchased a well used "71 351 Cleveland engine for my Mustang when I blew the other up many, many years ago. After I installed the engine and fired it up it filled the garage with smoke from a leaking valve cover gasket and a worn out engine. When I pulled the valve cover everything was covered in crud! I replaced the gasket and told a friend about the crud and he recommended I fill it with Amsoil which I did. When I saved enough money to overhaul it (due to a couple of broken piston rings) and took it apart the inside was completely clean. Everything looked like new down to the varnish removed from the rocker arms.

I run Amsoil signature series 5W 30 in my fully built 2015 Subaru STI and I can’t believe how I don’t burn a single drop of oil!! With my 6000 mile oil change interval.

Through personal experience I had the best results from Royal Purple for the longest of time.. until recently..about 5 or 6 years ago..I thought I was going crazy when white smoke excessively blew out my exhaust and no I do not over pour on my oil to have it burn rich.. started hearing knock like noises in the engine..car ran weird as shit too..come to find out, RP changed their formula to meet all these new emission standards..but also found out that they sold the original formula at a more expensive price.. converted to Mobil 1 and haven't had a problem since..seems like the new formula of Royal Purple seems to be watered down..I do believe they went through a change of ownership as well

Best value, use regular Mobil 1 and change every 5K miles. Added detergents and antioxidants don't lubricate. Shear and stress additives is basically zinc. High pressure additives are specifically for high lift cams and high pressure valve springs. All good, but don't be fooled by long drain intervals. Oil's cheap, flippin change it.

I started using AMS oil Sig series in my 2015 Subaru Forester and can't believe the gas mile improvement, cold weather starts, and how quiet the engine is.Thank God it's so easy to do filter and oil changes on the new Subaru's... they put the filter adjacent to the filler cap...

There is one issue with the oils designed to go 25, 000 miles and still lubricate... the oil filters in most cars still need changing long before the oil goes bad... once they clog and are on by-pass the oil is no longer being filtered... so unless you do the 25, 000 miles in 6 months, you must change the filter every recommended month frame... my Subaru filter is tiny... and even AMS oil says 1 year or 25, 000 miles.... I think if people change their oil as recommended, most top named Synthetics oils with a new filter, are going to work if you see the proper API ratings for each make of vehicle.

AMS oils are certainly the best.... are they worth the $$$ ... damn right... for gas mileage improvement, peace of mind... and if you have a Tractor type lawn mower, small engine, AMS oil keeps those air cooled engines running great. They make an oil just for those... Commercial grade. When I change the oil in those...the oil looks brand new... but I still change because of the small price of 1 and 1/2 quart of AMS..

I remember at a gun show an Amsoil representative was demonstrating the difference between Amsoil synthetic and mobile 1 synthetic by using two clean jars. He opened the bottles in front of us added nuts and bolts into both jars and poured Amsoil in one jar and mobile in the other and shook them. Well the one with mobile 1, the nuts and bolts scratched the jar pretty bad while Amsoil didn't.

I’m just a regular Joe, I drive a Toyota Tundra 2012. Bought it with 19, 000 miles and around 40, 000 started developing a tick tick noise. I couldn’t see how because I brought it to the Toyota dealer every 4, 000 miles to get an oil change with their full synthetic oil. When I asked the customer service guy why he said it was “normal” and that it needs to build up pressure and once the engine warmed up it’s fine. Well I thought how could it be normal when it never used to do that. So using the brain God gave me I decided to not listen to the dealership and I switched oils. After about 3000 miles using amsoil full synthetic the cold start tick tick noise began to fade. Now I’m due for another oil change and I’ll use amsoil. The tick tick noise is no longer audible on my cold starts. The engine sounds so much smoother. What a difference. I don’t support products usually but I’m just saying this product made a huge difference and I figure I should give credit where credit is due.

Recently saw another video on YouTube about the new Amazon basics oil. Their full synthetic oil carries an API+ rating which is supposedly top notch. Do you have any knowledge on that particular topic
