The Rifleman remains one of the most popular television Westerns of all time. It stars Chuck Conners as rancher Lucas McCain and Johnny Crawford as his son Mark McCain. Set in the 1880s in the fictional town of North Fork, the show follows the exploits of McCain and his son as they eke out a living on their ranch and come to the aid of the townsfolk when order is threatened.

The Rifleman aired on ABC from 1958 to 1963, as a production of Four Star Television. It was one of the first primetime series on US television to show a single parent raising a child. McCain was a widower. His wife died prior to the events of the series from smallpox.

The shows iconic opening sequence features McCain’s anachronistic Winchester Model 1892 rifle. It was customized to allow repeated firing by cycling its lever action. McCain demonstrates this technique in the opening credits, as well as a second modification that allowed him to cycle the action with one hand using a technique known as "spin-cocking". Conner’s steely gaze in the opening credits came to optimize the rugged image of the cowboy as portrayed on American television at the time.

So i got stuck without internet and cable for the week so had to get an antennae for awhile. Saw this show pop on and became hooked. This guy is such a badass not because of just his rifle skills but being the honorable and good man he is. Freaking legend.

When he spins the rifle & nonchalantly tosses it into his left hand, that's as COOL as it gets!🤠

Chuck Conners gets off 13 shots in 3 and a half seconds. Amazing reflexes. And the playful look to the camera is priceless.

Look at the way his balls absorb that recoil. That's a real man right there.

Chuck Connors was ambidextrous. He did the opening scene right handed but mostly he would use his left hand to shoot in the series. When playing for the Dodgers farm system, he was a switch hitter!

My parents would watch this show all the time and I would watch it with them growing up. Great memories! When my parents got older and I was visiting them one day, I was in the kitchen making them something to eat. The Rifleman came on. And out of the blue my mom said “after all these years I finally figured out what kind of rifle he’s shooting.” My dad said “Oh yeah? What kind”. My mom said “It’s a 12 gauge. I counted that he shot it 12 times so it’s a 12 gauge!”. My dad busted out laughing g so hard! He had a deep bear growl kind of voice and his laughter at my mom “revelation” shook the walls! 😂 God I miss them.

My dad loved watching this when I was growing up. I never understood how gangster the rifleman was until I grew up. The intro is literally this guy busting a shotgun wide open in the middle of a public street. Lol😂

A good show with numerous guest stars. I always chuckled when Mark complained about doing the dishes. After all, there were only two plates, knives and forks to wash!
