Sailing Hardcore - Life in ROUGH SEAS! (Pacific Crossing Part 2 of 8) S.V. Delos Ep. 417

We’re back with part 2 of our 3,000 nautical mile trip across the Pacific Ocean. We bash our way through one of the roughest nights we’ve had in YEARS as we round the turbulent stretch of ocean surrounding Cabo San Lucas. Sleep is out of the question, and the simplest of tasks require monumental effort. But as we make more miles out into the open ocean away from the compression zone, things start to settle, and by day 4 the wind clocks all the way around and we're able to set up the poles and get ready for some glorious downwind bliss.

The worst of it was behind us (at least for now) and we could kick back and the let the breeze at our backs push us along for days and days and days.

I think this episode really captures some of the realities of sailing...the ups and downs in moods and energies. How every aspect of daily life on passage is so drastically affected by the weather and conditions. We hope you enjoy this glimpse into what life is really like on passage for us.

11:37 watching sierra's expression as she told her stories and as she was told a story was priceless. 15:21 the GGR sailors (Golden Globe Race) weren't allowed to have anything that wasn't available in 1968 ! They used a "knot" method of determining speed, a small but long rope was put out with a water catching gadget on it. As it pulled out, each Knot tied in the rope was counted . They were calibrated to show the speed in "knots" and this method was considered to be the reason we use the KNOT for speed on boats. 16L47 The WINNER (KIRSTEN from SOUTH AFRICA) used a TWIN SAIL system, both sails furled and reefed with the same furler, She had her best speeds when she did this. She also eventually broke on of her poles but was so far ahead she won easily .

Sierra is a little trooper, nothing seems to phase her just like mum and dad, love it 👌👌

This GREAT!!! That people can see the tough days at sea. Where no sleep and exhaustion....just wears your brain and body out. And you just hold on while....while the boat and autopilot just keeps going. Where simple tasks become a challenge.

Like Brian in the cockpit, slouched and leaning against the winch with the cockpit cushion to hold....he wasn't feeling good. Been there too....

I had a 62' ketch. And covered over 150, 000 nautical miles, sailing thevworlds oceans. Been thru many storms....3 or 4 Hurricanes. And have lost 56 friends and acquaintances, who went down, or just never returned.

It's awesome....but there's bad days too.

Jeffery....⚘️

Great idea with cook = clean. Best indication of swell I've seen @18:30.
Lightly weighted line/rope hanging from bottom of drone makes it easier to catch.
Shoulda used a longer/thinner blur for Brian bathing.

Whenever we flew in combat conditions, it took a good three flights before we settled into a groove. The same is true with most means of transportation, including driving across the country, and -- ta-da! -- sailing.

Sail poles - I see you're attaching them to the boat with a line. Are you using two lines per pole, or just one? I remember the time one fell overboard...

23:45 - delightful looking food!

10:59 has given me more perspective than I’ve ever had from a sailing channel. Dang. With a baby on board?? Amazing 💕☺️💕

Hi, Conor. It's Michael and Suzanne Poulos from Wilmette Harbor. It's good to see you back on the Delos show. We hope you are enjoying your passage. We just bought a Catalina 375 and sailed it from Cleveland to Wilmette. Not quite a Pacific crossing, but still a challenge. Especially in the ship channels. Have a great time.

Brian, nice catch on the DJI drone! Good idea to wear gloves. I learned that same trick after the 2nd time I cut a finger!
I noticed you guys run the mizzen mainsail when you're flying the double headsail setup. Makes sense, since the mizzen is small enough that it doesn't really blanket the headsails. I too pole out my asym and my genoa when I fly them downwind. My pole is extendable so I can dial it to the length I need.
Hey, that southern tip of the Baja peninsula can get rough. In 2019, I did my 2nd HaHa race and we got into Cabo just as a tropical storm was only a day away from landfall. Fortunately, it passed more into the Sea of Cortez and Cabo only got some rain and strong winds.
You're exactly correct about crew 'taking care of each other'. That's necessary for building teamwork and collaboration between people. If you can build that idea into everyday events, when the s**t hits the fan, that 'taking care of each other' also comes into play.

I think growing up on a sailboat must be an absolutely amazing experience as a kid. She's never going to lose those sea legs.

Also commend you guys to keep the channel about sailing and including the more technical stuff in separate videos!

I crewed a 1000 mile passage on a 36 ft sloop with a 60 yr old lifetime commercial fisherman 3 months ago. I was amazed at how he could catch Z's at about any moment in any sea conditions. Practice Makes Perfect.
