Simon: "Why's everything got French names?"
Y'all weren't the only country doing the "colonize the new world" thing.

Simon: "What's going on with Louisiana?"
Every American: *knowing nod*

So maybe Simon needs to do a "side projects" "Today I Found Out" on the Louisiana Purchase

The most heartbreaking part of this is that 80% of this two part series isn't searching for the killer, it's uncovering the secrets and corruption of the Jennings police department.

As someone who grew up in a small southern town, I’m always scared of small town cops. You never know how bad the corruption really is and it differs from place to place. My town wasn’t nearly this bad, but we did have our fair share of bullshit that went on. And we still have the occasional scandal that happens even though the town has grown significantly over the years, and it’s because the police still have that “good ol’ boys” small town mentality.

What amuses me about Simon's take on the US police is that he, like a lot of people outside and inside the US don't really understand that alot of law enforcement in these small towns are in similar positions to law enforcement in those countries he talks about. Poor living conditions, a desire for power and security and little government oversight are common factors.

So Callum has written us a movie length episode.
Well done, Callum, can't wait for when he writes a mini-series length one.

Pretty sure the majority of us who watch these thoroughly enjoy when Simon goes off course on his rants. Yeah, yeah, yeah…..allegedly.

As an American, with cop friends, I can tell you with certainty that it's appalling how low the conviction rate is, and how light the sentencing is, for corrupt police officers

Simon, you should know that Louisiana Man smiles down at even the most extreme Florida Man and says "aren't you just the cutest thing."

"Pimping angels in heaven" is such a weirdly poetic line. Great job as always, Callum.

I love how Jen ads in a little clip with a woman named Jen when she gets introduced each time. I’m always excited to see what she comes up with lol.
Jen’s a 10/10 keeper as an editor ❤

I worked for a foster care agency, and what you are describing doesn't just happens in America, but it happens a lot more than you could ever imagine. Most girls and women never report so the stories are never known to the public. --- I worked with a teen whose mom and uncle sold her constantly.

I always imagine Jen as just off camera thinking, "Simon has no idea what I do, does he?"

We have a HUGE amount of French influence here in Louisiana. You see it in the names of places, in the architecture (especially in older cities) and even in some people's accents if they're from remote regions in Louisiana. We also have a lot of native American tribes left because Louisiana never evicted many of them at all, the culture here is extremely rich as a result. My least favorite thing about Louisiana is stuff like the Jennings 8. There's not much danger for me, I'm sure, since I'm a dude that's a non sex worker, but as you can probably imagine, I don't like the feeling that some of the people who were involved with all of that are still working with the Jennings Police department.

Damn, Jen's insertion of the clip from the "This Is America" music video is terribly correct...

In articles interviewing former female convicts, some former prison guards, and overall reporting on prison investigations, as far as I've seen there is no female prison, neither high security nor low security, that doesn't commodify sexual assault of the female prisoners. Women of color are unfortunately taken advantage of and treated cruelly the most.

After a scandalous investigation revealing a guard as a rapist or pimp of their inmates, I've seen their combating statements like, "Well, she asked for it, " "She wanted it, " "She said yes, " and bullshit of that sort. Even if that's the truth -- I believe it rarely is -- how the hell is a prisoner able to fully consent to an authority figure that can control their entire quality of life and whether they get solitary confinement, a cruel and overly abused punishment that studies have shown cause PTSD and/or social detachment/deficiencies?

It might as well be the same as that poor woman imprisoned and sexually assaulted by the "Amazon Review Killer", the case Casual Criminalist covered just prior to this one. The killer likewise claimed it wasn't rape, but of course she cooperated under threat of death or grievous bodily harm! Who fricking wouldn't? I may personally find that sexual assault is torture and as awful as death because of the lifetime of trauma, fear, and distrust, I still choose the option that is least likely to get me killed for the sake of my loved ones who care for and depend on me.

Anyone ever wonder how long it takes Simon to read his kids a bedtime story with the amount of side note rambling he does?

Simon: "Don't admit to, write down, record, or tell anyone your crimes, c'mon what are you doing?"

Also Simon: "The frozen cookie dough I stole from this supermarket I worked at, is delicious."
