Mistakes are for learning. He won’t make that mistake again….So young. I’ve been there so many times in my career. I have some stories about mistakes that are funny, awkward, and tense, but with a recovery. Don’t take yourself too seriously.❤️

Perfection gets in the way of excellence. It sounds like sometimes we get too focused on perfection.

I understand this kid and his perfectionist mindset and anxiety for making one mistake. I was like this for most of my life before I learned how to relax a little more. It’s a tough way to live.

I'm 56 and have been in the medical field for 33 years. I still make check off lists so I don't forget things. Medical providers using electronic charts still use Post it notes and scratch paper. I work in another city so I have a list at home I go through every day before I walk out my door. I can't afford to forget to order a patient's test OR leave my lunch at home in the fridge. For the caller...could someone else have run the pork to the venue? Could the caller have gone back with the pork? Honestly, a good boss would have checked the poor kids delivery before he left. A teaching moment lost...and a second pair of eyes never hurts especially when an employee is young and/or learning.

This young man just entered the school of hard knocks. What should he do? Learn from his mistakes. That's what you do. And he will continue learning the rest of his life (hopefully). I wish him all the best.

Ya live 'N learn, young man. Kudos to him for being in the mindset to even care that he did make a mistake. Too many people, even grown ass adults, avoid owning up to their mistakes.

Ive screwed up way worse than this a number of times and survived. Also worked in retail mgmt and hired a lot of high school kids. 99% were pretty good workers. Had a few mistakes here and there, my usual response "well, what did you learn from this?" And then "You're forgiven, lets move on.". Its only when someone is making the same mistake over abd over it becomes an issue.

This kid sounds like a genuine guy. Id hire him.

Yeah this happens to me all the time at work. Just trying to survive each day and get a paycheck.

It's okay buddy. Unforgiveable work mistakes are malicious mistakes. Your mistake is what I would consider a failure of process and not a mistake. It's partly the employer's fault. You go over the problem and you say how can next time be better, it gets implemented into the process "okay next time we make sure the car is all empty". And that is it.

Dear kid, when I was 18 I worked in a restaurant making $5.5 an hour and was hard work and my coworkers got mad at me all the time. I now make $34 an hour and the job is not stressful and less work. Lol. My point is, don’t stress the future where you think it’s only going to get worse.

A checklist and just double triple checking the order. I have been there man. 😢 The anticipation is just more overwelming than the task itself.

Usually when people call with a work mistake it’s something like sleeping with the bosses wife or caught stealing from coworkers. This is not true end of the world brother, you will make far worse mistakes throughout your life than this so take a deep breath, learn, and move on

I don't know anyone who doesn't make mistakes on the job. A good boss will use these events to coach you up and help you be better at your job. If they berate you or write you up for one mistake then they may be more fearful of reprocusions from above them they what happens to you.

Can we take a moment to recognize this is a high schooler listening to a career advice show? He’s going to be ok! I wish some of the adults I work with took their jobs this serious.
I do think this could point out a process improvement for the catering side of the business. Perhaps once the order is complete, count out all items/containers and add the final count to the order list. This way anyone making the delivery will know that if the list had 10 containers but the driver only handed over 9 containers, right away the shortage would be noticed and the situation could be rectified.

The blame falls on the manager, not this young man. He should have been helped when loading & checking the list, especially since he's so young and has never done this task before. The mistake made was the manger not doing their job.

I see this as a learning curve for the young man. I also see this as a failure of leadership. Where was the supervisor? Why were they putting so much responsibility on him if this is his first time? This would have been a great opportunity for a mentor. I don’t blame him. If he’s too young to deliver using the company van, perhaps he’s just too young to deliver the whole catering by himself. Also, I hope he receives mileage reimbursement.

I know my mistake is so different but I’ve done collision repair for 10 years now been working on cars my whole life since I was a 5 year old I’ve always taken so much pride and care in what I do but lately life has been rough with other stuff going on. Today a truck went home it was an insanely huge job whole front end I had to section back and fix everything from front of bed forward I filled the coolant 2 times checked it over and over customer gets it and takes it on the highway and it overheated so I filled it up and other then that it was perfect. At the end of the conversation he told me I lack diligence and had no pride I don’t know why but it crushed me I apologized over and over I know we all make mistakes and maybe I’m being to hard on myself but I feel terrible inside. I know probably nobody cares but found this video just looking for closure life’s been so hard lately hope everyone has a blessed day

OMG Owen I just did a similar thing and made a huge mistake at work because I was so stressed, under pressure, and worried about being perfect. I'm so humiliated and just waiting to be scolded (and I'm 54, lol).
